TRIVIA

I may run rings around you Or escape your clutching grip Or leave a treacherous trail That gives a sudden slip.
(If you’re not careful!)

You always end up winning, While I shrink with each new meet: Our bouts will be my ruin, But you’ll come out smelling sweet.

What am I?

ANSWER: A bar of soap.

RANDOM TIDBITS

An ice cube in a glass of water will not raise the water level when it melts. The amount of space it displaces as a cube is equal to the amount it takes up when liquefied.

A ball of glass will bounce higher than a ball made of rubber. A ball of solid steel will bounce higher than one made entirely of glass.

A bubble is round because the air within it presses equally against all its parts, thus causing all surfaces to be equidistant from its center.

A whip makes a cracking sound because its tip moves faster than the speed of sound (760 miles per hour).

An egg will float if placed in water to which sugar has been added.

How faith and prayer helped one woman overcome her panic attacks.

By Donna Woodward, Hoschton, Georgia

How had my world gotten so small? I asked myself one day as I finished typing up a court deposition in my home office.

Panic attacks made working outside the home virtually impossible. Whenever I faced a new situation, especially one in which I felt inadequate or was the center of attention, my heart hammered in my chest and my mouth went dry. Crazy, right? But panic attacks had nearly taken over my life.

“I don’t want to feel this way anymore!” I cried to my husband, Don, that night.

“You don’t have to,” he said. “God will help you.”

I wished I had his confidence, but why would God help a scaredy-cat like me?

The following afternoon I pulled on my trusty tennis sneakers and went for a walk around the neighborhood, taking my normal, familiar route. Soon Don and I would be leaving our home in South Carolina and moving to a brand-new active adult community in Georgia. God, I want to be a part of my new community, I prayed. I don’t want to hide anymore.

A warm feeling enveloped me and an idea flew into my head. Start a ladies’ group. The last thing I could do was start a group of any kind! Still, the idea stuck with me as Don and I packed for our move. “If you don’t try, you’ll never know what you can do,” Don said when I told him about it.

We got settled in our new place. I contacted the activities director and scheduled the first ladies’ group meeting. I couldn’t back out of it now. Still, I was terrified stepping into the meeting room. What if I had a panic attack?

When I finally got up to speak in front of all those strangers I was shaking so hard I couldn’t hold my notes. God, don’t bring me this far and leave me alone!

The warm feeling I remembered from my walk returned. My hands stopped shaking. I cleared my throat and introduced myself.

That was three years ago. Today our group, The Blue Sneakers Club, has more than 90 members. People know us by the trusty bright tennis shoes we all wear, just like the ones I wore the day God answered my prayer. My world gets bigger every day.

The Church Plaque

One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed Little Johnny was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. The seven-year- old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the boy, and said quietly, “Good morning, son.”

“Good morning pastor” replied the young man, focused on the plaque.

“Sir, what is this?” Little Johnny asked.

“Well son, these are all the people who have died in the service,” replied the pastor.

Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque.

Little Johnny’s voice barely broke the silence when he asked quietly, “Which one, sir, the 8:30 or the 10:30 service?”

Needing Help

Sophie went to see a psychiatrist about her husband.

“Doctor, My husband has this problem. Almost every night now he’s dreaming he’s a refrigerator!”

“My dear, that is not really a problem! A lot of people dream that they are somebody or something unusual...”

Sophie leans forward as she softly whispers this confidence: “But you see doctor it is also a problem for me! Jake sleeps with his mouth open and the light keeps me awake!”

Ants

The teacher was giving her class of seven-year-olds a natural history lesson.

“Worker ants,” she told them, “can carry pieces of food five times their own weight. What do you conclude from that?”

One child was ready with an answer: “They don’t have a union.”

Bad Combinations

Many of us “Old Folks” (those over 60, WAY over 60, or hovering near 60) are quite confused about how we should present ourselves. We’re unsure about the kind of image we are projecting and whether or not we are correct as we try to conform to current fashions. Despite what you may have seen on the streets, the following combinations DO NOT go together and should be avoided:

1. A nose ring and bifocals
2. Spiked hair and bald spots
3. A pierced tongue and dentures
4. Miniskirts and support hose
5. Ankle bracelets and corn pads
6. Speedo’s and cellulite
7. A belly button ring and a gall bladder surgery scar
8. Unbuttoned disco shirts and a heart monitor
9. Midriff shirts and a midriff bulge
10. Bikinis and liver spots
11. Short shorts and varicose veins
12. Inline skates and a walker

And last, but not least... my personal favorite:
13. Thongs and Depends.

Please keep these basic guidelines foremost in your mind when you shop.

Controversy Of The Cross
July 4, 2011

A case before the US Supreme Court focused on whether a religious symbol, specifically a cross, should be allowed on public land. Mark Sherman, writing for the Associated Press, said that although the cross in question was erected in 1934 as a memorial to soldiers who died in World War I, one veteran’s group that opposed it called the cross “a powerful Christian symbol” and “not a symbol of any other religion.”

The cross has always been controversial. In the first century, the apostle Paul said that Christ had sent him “to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Cor. 1:17-18). As followers of Christ, we see the cross as more than a powerful Christian symbol. It is the evidence of God’s power to free us from the tyranny of our sin.

In a diverse and pluralistic society, the controversy over religious symbols will continue. Whether a cross can be displayed on public property will likely be determined by the courts. But displaying the power of the cross through our lives will be decided in our hearts.

Christ takes each sin, each pain, each loss,
And by the power of His cross
Transforms our brokenness and shame
So that our lives exalt His name. —D. De Haan

Nothing speaks more clearly of God’s love than the cross.

Read: 1 Corinthians 1:17-25

The message of the cross is . . . the power of God. —1 Corinthians 1:18

Happy Fourth of July everyone!

May God continue to Bless The United States of America!

Today marks my 13th FRanniversary. I remember reading through a thread that night which asked Veterans to offer comments which prompted me to sign up on FReeRepublic.
