Who is it?

An Englishman took a business trip to New York. When he arrived, the hotel clerk asked him a riddle.

“My mom and dad had a baby. It wasn’t my brother. It wasn’t my sister. Who was it?”

The Englishman thought long and hard, but eventually gave up. “I don’t know, who was it?”

The hotel clerk responded, “It was me!”

The Englishman thought that was hilarious. He couldn’t wait to get home and tell this funny joke to his family and friends in England.

When he arrived home they met him at the airport and he asked them: “My mom and dad had a baby. It wasn’t my brother. It wasn’t my sister. Who was it?”

His friends thought and thought about it until they gave up. So he told them, “It was a hotel clerk I met in New York.”

Coins

A spokesperson for the U.S. Mint announced that a new fifty-cent piece was being issued to honor two great American patriots.

On one side of the coin would be Teddy Roosevelt and on the other side, Nathan Hale.

Asked why two people were going to be on the same coin, the spokesman replied, “Now, when you toss a coin you can simply call.... ‘Ted’s or Hale’s’.”

The Pub

A man in the pub orders a beer. He gets his beer and begins to drink it when he notices that the beer is kind of warm. So he mentions something to the bartender, who tells him to shut up and just drink his beer.

Then it is time to pay and instead of giving three $1 dollar bills to the bartender, the guy throws 30 dimes behind the counter.

The bartender is mad, and is on his hands and knees collecting change as the guy leaves.

The next day the man is back, and he comes in waiving a $5 dollar bill.

The bartender thinks, “Okay, business is business,” and lets him in. Again, the beer is kind of warm, but the guy doesn’t say anything.

Comes time to pay, the man gives him the $5 bill.

The bartender goes to the register to get the change, but instead of taking out two $1 dollar bills, he takes out 20 dimes and throws them all around the entire pub.

The bartender says, “Here is your damn change.”

The man looks around and remains quite calm. He takes out ten dimes, throws them behind the counter and says, “Gimme another beer!”

The Star-Spangled Banner Prayer

The true story behind how Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that became our national anthem.

Do you ever think of “The Star-Spangled Banner” as a prayer?

Quite frankly I never had until a couple of years ago, as someone recounted the whole story of how the words were written by Francis Scott Key when he was in prison during the War of 1812 and was watching the battle, hoping for some sign of victory, for some glimpse of the flag still flying.

“O! Say can you see...?” he wrote. It’s a question followed by a question ending with a question: “O! Say does that star-spangled banner yet wave/O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”

We never really sing it that way. At ballparks or high school gyms, when everybody’s got their hats off and hands on their hearts, we usually end the song with a shout or everybody clapping. We sing it like it ends with an exclamation point rather than a question mark. But the question mark is still there.

Job Interview

An employment interviewer for a big company in New York was talking to an attractive young woman applying for a job. Looking over the application form, the interviewer noticed that the girl had not answered one important question concerning transportation to and from work.

“What about your bus line?” the interviewer asked her.

“I don’t believe I mentioned it,” came the pleased reply, “but it’s a 36C.”

It is great that I have a nice small conservative church. Several veterans hit the podium this morning asking for prayers and thanks for our troops.

What Price Freedom

I remember the flurry of each glorious Fourth of July,
even in the shadowy depths of that green hell they sent me to.
Perhaps it was based in truth, or just more political lies,
but we served, and some to die as will any proud military do.

We had ‘incoming’ fire instead of a fireworks show,
and screams of pain, instead of cheers and laughs galore.
I saw my friends perish, just those ordinary guys you know,
and later we put them in rubber bags amid the splattered gore.

Like so many other citizens, I too have stood in their shoes,
and so I honor those heroes who quietly serve us valiantly today.
Heroes made this country by effort, not those who curse and boo,
for those have no idea the demanding price that was bloody paid.

America continues on still free, borne by those with pride
serving all, regardless of their devotion or lack of love of country
This national birthday marks a country’s rise and right to abide
bought with blood of those lost on the ground, in the air, or on the sea
