Persistence as a Key to Success
Practice may not make perfect, but it does make practicing a habit.
By Mary Lou Carney
This is to my Fathers glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. John 15:8 (NIV)
Last summer I set out three tomato plants. Two promptly disappeared in the night, dug up by some mysterious animal who left craterlike holes to mark my loss. On the sole surviving plant I hung all my hopes for growing fresh tomatoes. Finally, a tiny green ball appeared, one tiny green ball that grew into one midsized tomatomy entire crop for the season.
This morning, I planted three tomato plants...again. I placed them in a different spot, in the corner of my big flowerbed. Im hoping my nocturnal creature with a penchant for tomato plants wont find them. Im hoping theyll get better sunlight. Im hoping for more than one tomato.
My mother used to say, Anything worth doing is worth doing well. So as a child I was taught to do my chores with an eye toward perfectionwhether it was ironing pillowcases, washing hundreds of cobwebby jars at the start of canning season or choosing raspberries to freeze for my annual 4-H project. It was all to be done...well, well.
But Id like to amend that aphorism of Mothers: Anything worth doing is worth doing...again...and again, if necessary. So what if you dont succeed? Thats what second attempts were made for! Practice may not make perfect, but it does make practicing a habit. And thats a good thing.
I like to imagine that even now my tomato plants are putting down roots that will let them stretch toward the summer sun flooding that bit of yard.
I want to stretch, too, beyond the comfort of things I do well. I think that the God who created second chancesand tomato plantswould be pleased with that.
Give me courage to grow in new and exciting waysand to bear much fruit.
Whale Speak
An expert on whales was telling friends about some of the unusual findings he had made. “For instance,” he said, “some whales can communicate at a distance of 300 miles.”
“What on earth would one whale say to another 300 miles away?” asked a sarcastic member of the group.
“I’m not absolutely sure,” answered the expert, “but it sounds something like this: ‘Heeeeeeey! Can you hear me nowwww!?!’
“Small Town Check”
I had just moved from an apartment to a house in the same small town. One day at the grocery store, I used the last of my personalized checks bearing my old address. The cashier examined the document and asked if everything on it was correct. I assured her that it was, and she started to put the check in the cash drawer. But then she inquired again if everything was accurate.
“Why do you ask?” I responded.
“Because,” she replied, “my husband and I moved to this apartment yesterday, and I don’t remember seeing you at breakfast.”
“People have been cooking and eating for thousands of years, so if you are the very first person to have thought of adding fresh lime juice to scalloped potatoes, try to understand that there must be a reason for this.”

Sometimes we don’t have to change friends, if we understand that friends change.
(So, when you see me acting silly, you will know I am enjoying my 'youth'!)
Oh, no, Dubya! Prayers up that your son doesn’t lose his eye! (And, prayers for mom and dad too!)
Can you share what kind of dog attacked him?
Yep...I do that 2nd childhood thing now and then myself! :)
Hope his medical team are top notch and can save/repair the damage.
Please keep us informed of his progress.
I do it every day.....LOL!
Now and then, I do an older lady and don’t enjoy it much!!!
Sorry about the dog attacking your son. Please let us know how he’s doing as soon as you know and how old is he, Dubya? We will all pray for a good outcome with no eye being lost. Thinking of your family!! And praying hard.
Huh???
So true...so true!
LOL!

There is none righteous,
No, not one".....Romans 3:10
And, isn't it a BLESSING.....
That He still loves us unconditionally?
