I was just watching the original "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Yes, he deserved his Oscar for the role of Rooster Cogburn but opposite him was someone who played his part horribly. I am talking about Glenn Campbell as the Texas Ranger. Sheesh! Talk about stilted delivery. Really bad. Another example of bad acting was also in a John Wayne movie---"The Alamo." It was Frankie Avalon as Smitty who was supposed to be a young Tennessee frontiersman. I like Frankie Avalon in the beach flicks but, let's face it, he was waaay too urban to be believable in the role of Smitty. Whenever I see "The Alamo," it is impossible to forget that this is just a movie because of Frankie Avalon's completely unconvincing acting.
There are many other major movies with examples of really horrible acting. I cited a couple of such examples, so please list yours.
Anything with Kevin Costner. Frankly, I don’t like too many of the current actors — excuse me, actOIDS. No depth at all.
Hey, as a young'in I had a crush on that girl.
Nah, he was so positively over the top in "And Justice For All" someone should have given him a gigantic pig for the ham acting.
IIRC I believe she was actually a local from the area that Speilberg cast. I believe I read that he used alot of the locals for various scenes.
So she was no pro (and it did come out with her ‘shark in the pond’ moment)
Nah, she played a gangster’s girl in Paris. Actually, she cried a little, and even that was funny.
Too bad she hasn’t done more comedy. She’s as good as Jean Hagen in “Singin’ in the Rain.”
I remember reading a review of some Brando movie where he played a German. The critic raved about how realistic Brando's accent was. I thought, you moron, why would an actor playing a German be speaking English with a German accent to another character who is supposedly German as well. I can't watch those movies anymore without laughing. And there's a million of them.
True, but if the Betazoid could read my thoughts....
***I used to drive my wife crazy when I watched Star Trak 2 on TV, because I would always fire Deanna Troy. There would inevitably be some scene where the whole conflict could have been avoided if she had simply done her freepin’ job and read the thoughts of the antagonist.
Then Star Trek Voyager came on and I fired the Captain in the first episode. No Captain would risk a whole crew to cruise across 80 years’ worth of space when they had a machine right there that could send almost everybody on a one-way trip home. Most fans don’t remember that part.
I gather I should have pinged you also to the previous post
Insert “even a broken clock is right twice a day” here. :-)
I can’t imagine anyone else in the role, either. And I grant you, he was a movie star.
But there’s no denying that Bogart was a lousy, stiff, one-note actor. Claude Raines, Ingrid Bergman, Peter Lorre, et al, held him up all through the film.
Adam Sandler in Little Nicky. Come to think of it, Adam Sandler in anything.
mommy dearest - faye dunaway....
“Sorry, when Rick pounds his fist on the table and fights back tears I say thats the single greatest moment in cinema. full stop.”
A little hammy with the glass falling over, if you ask me.
And how do you account for what Bogart did to a great line like, “I remember every detail. The Germans wore gray; you wore blue.” He read it like a Chinese food menu.
The movie is so good, it’s STILL a great line. But no thanks to Mr. Bacall.
So bad, it was funny.
***That reminds me, I just saw a documentary on Marijuana. “Reefer Madness” fits the category of “so bad that it’s a comedy”.
I’m convinced that’s why Rocky Horror Picture Show is the longest running movie in history. Tim Curry, Meatloaf, whoever else acting so bad it was funny.
I thought maybe it was the script, it was so bad Andre Norton made them take her name off it. Then I saw him in "V".
The man truly can not act. Such a waste.
Even Oscar winning actors can be bad. Julia Roberts is uniformly bad. I don’t “buy” her in any role she plays. Tom Hanks sucked in “Catch Me if You Can”. Stupid accent didn’t sound remotely “Bostonian”. I hate Will Ferrell in almost everything. OK, he’s got the “jerky guy” personality down. What else can he do? The only reason I see his movies is my brother loves him. I normally can’t stand Robin Williams, but when he does serious roles, he can act. So can Jim Carrey, when he’s not being “funny”.
Brad Pitt in Benjamin Buttons !!! How did that movie get made? It was horrible and he was totally not likeable at any of his stupid ages.
you should've seen him in the Highlander TV series. (one episode)
..on second thought NOT, was very bad...painful.
The scene where he mocks Ringo’s gun twirling with his shot glass is a classic. Even Ringo’s pals were laughing. “I’m your Huckleberry.”
