I was just watching the original "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Yes, he deserved his Oscar for the role of Rooster Cogburn but opposite him was someone who played his part horribly. I am talking about Glenn Campbell as the Texas Ranger. Sheesh! Talk about stilted delivery. Really bad. Another example of bad acting was also in a John Wayne movie---"The Alamo." It was Frankie Avalon as Smitty who was supposed to be a young Tennessee frontiersman. I like Frankie Avalon in the beach flicks but, let's face it, he was waaay too urban to be believable in the role of Smitty. Whenever I see "The Alamo," it is impossible to forget that this is just a movie because of Frankie Avalon's completely unconvincing acting.
There are many other major movies with examples of really horrible acting. I cited a couple of such examples, so please list yours.
A tie for worst actors trying to mimic a quarterback. Kenau Reeves in The Replacements and Adam Sandler in the Longest Yard.
Randy Quaid in “Dead Solid Perfect”.
He’s particularly bad in DRIVE ANGRY.
Also, Madonna was terrible in DICK TRACY and some forgettable movie where she was on a deserted island with a borderline abusive guy. Come to think of it, the actor was awful in it, too.
Brad Pitt was both bad AND annoying in the Benjamin Buttons movie. Creepy part, stupid movie.
Ed Harris is a crazy lib and he was also not very credible in EMPIRE FALLS.
At the very first notes of rap music in movie soundtrack, we are finished with the film. We no longer watch music award shows for that reason, including country western because it's found its way into all music award shows.
“All the actors in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy”
I watch LOTR Trilogy every year and have ordered LOTR Trilogy extended version blu-ray from Amazon.com.
she was so bad it was campy good
Violence done artfully is a singularly aesthetic optic.
The entire cast of “3000 Miles to Graceland”. That movie sucked.
Speaking of Avalon in The Alamo, how about Tony Curtis in The Black Shield of Falworth “Yonder lies the castle of me fodder” (in full Brooklynese)
Bill Murray in The Razors Edge - It was Carl Spackler meets Somerset Maugham
I love the Duke but the movie where he plays a Fed in Hawaii looking for commies and Branagen were hard to watch. I never got to see GK but I hear is is legendary bad.
The absolute worst:
Nick Nolte in Lorenzo’s Oil!!!
Amen to that. I just watched that movie again a couple of weeks ago, and had the same reaction.
There was probably nothing up to that level again until Kubrick's 2001, and that was ahead of its time in the effects department.
IMO all the actors in LOTR were quite good except Frodo, Elrond and Eowyn. The miscasting of Frodo was a huge and damaging mistake. Much too pretty for a hobbit, besides his absence of acting ability.
Gandalf in particular was excellent. He was almost exactly as I’d envisioned in my head for 40 years.
Yeh, the opening scene in ‘Cobra’...worst of all time.
Yeh, the opening scene in ‘Cobra’...worst of all time.
Ben Affleck in “Pearl Habor” (actually, technically, Ben Affleck in any movie.)
Very clever post idea! I read through looking for anyone mentioning my old college roommate (whom I won’t name here) but without success. But, boy, is he an awful actor! Of course, knowing him personally colors my perception, but having seen him in several roles, I’m quite certain anyway!
How about Tom Cruise in Far and Away. His Irish accent was so bad.
Agreed. but whats even worse is when half the cast attempts bad accents and the others don’t even bother.
