Hey all, I'm looking into getting an AR15, but am totally overwhelmed by all the choices. What I want is something that's reliable, and has a rifle length barrel. Cheaper is better. I am not looking into getting a crazy customizable hyper-accurate super gun. Just a plinker. I've seen the Olympic Arms plinker, looked kinda rough.
kind of rough on the walls and the neighbors walls and the neighbors neighbors walls isn’t it?
Pretty easy to ventilate the kids and pets?
I spent a good deal of my weekend at a local gunshow. ... I purposely went to the show to gauge the attitude of the show visitors and vendors. This is not a pretty time in our history. I met only one couple who had a belief that things were not going any further downhill. When pressed for why they were at a gunshow, the male stated that he 'wanted to buy her something so she could learn to shoot, incase of a home intruder. He bought for her a little tip up barrel .22! All the while at the same vendors table, men and women were selecting the best feeling 9mm, .40 cal, or .45 of varying magazine capacities. The most popular rifle at the show seemed to be the AK74 in the lighter ammo round rather than the 7.62 x 39 ... less recoil and better close in destructive power in the tumbling round! There was a knife and sword vendor doing a pretty good business, too. Samurai style swords and Tantas seemed popular.
Home defense planning seems to be on the rise, finally.
Two good references sources one for buying, one for building.

Building:
You’re in Peoria, right?
Bump!
Nope. Near Boise, ID.
That WAS you! I waved on my way by to Portland last week, but I guess you didn’t see me.
I'm of the same school; as primitive as possible in anticipation for the most primitive scenario as possible. Iron sights will never fail you.
Agreed. Bushmaster out of the box with a match grade barrel is a solid reliable weapon. Don’t try to build your own.
I love your tagline!
Sorry, I must have been busy ogling the local gun shops’ wares.
Rock River...and add on an EOTech Holographic Scope—the long one—down the road. The RR is solid and the EOTech is fun and well worth it.
I got one built on a generic lower with an HBAR Del-Ton upper from a place out of Tennessee called Robertson Trading Post. Super accurate shooter, very reliable, and I got it shipped with a case and a mag for under $700. Mine’s been rock solid.
They got the parts and built them there at their store, so they can do it cheap.
They don’t have them all the time, but occasionally they have them in stock.
They sell on GunsAmerica. I’ve bought from them multiple times. They are a pleasure to do business with and will often negotiate on prices if you give them a call.
You can search their inventory by caliber here: http://www.gunsamerica.com/Search.htm?OG=0&ONG=0&T=robertson+trading+post
Even if they don’t have something now, you should check back from time to time, because their inventory updates constantly.
You could also save some money and get to know your weapon very well if you build your own...
My brother in law has a great Rock River. I’d recommend it.
Yes it's pretty ...and pretty heavy though as well. :-/
Only if you have forgotten where they are.
“kind of rough on the walls and the neighbors walls and the neighbors neighbors walls isnt it?”
Could be, but ammo selection does make that less of a risk than loading up one’s defense magazines with steel core surplus Warsaw Pact ammo.
I recommended the AK-47 because of price, reliability, and price. However, I should have made clear that I suggested using the surplus stuff for practice.
Ultimately, gun control does come down to hitting your target. A good defense load should not overly penetrate an intruder.
Build it yourself.
Buy a stripped lower and start from there.
Do some research and decide what you want at the high end and the minimum at the low end and then with careful purchasing you can build a high end weapon for a lower to mid price range.
With the proliferation of vendors of AR lower receivers it would seem that there are only a few houses actually doing the machine work and most are just buying the finished stripped lower on a contract.
Most of all....have fun and welcome to the addiction.
