Good morning gardeners. Well this past week brought a respite from the sunny hot weather here in Mississippi. We received two days of beneficial rains, which helped to revive my garden. Watching the radar it looked like a good portion of south-central Texas from San Antonio to the northeast corner received some rain also. I hope it was helpful to our gardeners over that way. My winter squash are growing like mad and my hot and sweet peppers are doing great. What is left of my tomatoes seem to have revived a bit during these rainy and cloudy days. I really hope that what ever weather you have had improved a bit for you and your gardens this past week.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

You are probably right! Because when I looked up the term Rocket Root Trees (The description on the Henry Field’s site) the first search result was Gurney’s.

I planted a few seeds a couple of months ago, when I seeded my paste tomatoes but I think I may have neglected them because they never germinated. I planted some more GC seeds along with more paste tomatoes about a week ago and they have sprouted. I hope my growing season is long enough for them to produce.

Don't know what rocket root means, but I can tell you that the peach trees took off like rockets! They had green buds on them when I opened the box and within 4 days of planting them, they had leaves and blossoms. I've never planted a tree that started off that well.

Only drawback, and I'm not sure everyone would see it that way, is that the roots were LONG and many. We had to dig darn big holes to keep from bunching up the roots. :)

the roots were LONG and many.

I think that is what they mean by Rocket Roots. From Gurney's web site - "Our innovative concept in proper pear and cherry tree shipping is based on keeping the single most important tree components (roots!) intact and viable. Pears and cherries, in particular, produce larger root laterals than other fruit trees. Trees dug with a majority of these roots undamaged perform much, much better than those whose roots have been severely cut back."

I am not going to try a second tomato crop, but would like to try collards when things cool down some. I think that I will try some yellow tomatos next year, and look for a more productive grape tomato.

I live in fear of broken hips.

and I live in fear of my recurring nightmare where I'm crossing the street with the traffic light in my favor and I'm run down by this crazed woman gardener on her way to the next super plant sale.

How many buckets do you have stacked under those plants? What are they filled with?

Thank you, I’ll check our winds and set the panels accordingly. I think we’ll be using the full 16’ panels, we have lots of room out there. I’ll check the LSU website too, thank you.

Very impressive layout and the block wall is the sign of a professional. Where does the water come from for your tank and what is the mulch on the slope? I use expensive city water on my garden and have to use pressure reducers on my drip lines. I watered everything really good the past few days and now radar is showing some serious rain just offshore >;(

"I hope my growing season is long enough for them to produce."

Most tomatoes are in the 70-80 day range, you should be fine. I won't start my fall tomatoes for a while yet.

Jelly Bean is a good producing grape tomato. I planted Golden Rave yellow plum tomatoes this year and they are fantastic. Heavy producer and very tasty. I made a tomato/cucumber/onion salad with 3 colors of tomato last week and it was beautiful. I remove strips of skin from my cucumbers to give the slices a ‘striped’ effect too.

Most tomatoes really need 2-3 feet between plants, with rows being at least 3 feet apart. At that spacing, my tomatoes still intertwine fairly early in the season.

Very nice looking garden!

Do you start your plants including tomatoes from seed?

Yes, sir. Of my 160-something tomato plants this year, at least 120 of them were started from seed. Everything else in the garden is from seed.

You are amazing. You should set up a webcam in your yard so we could watch and “help” you. Speaking of camera have you or your husband ever used a Wildlife night time camera and if so can you recommend one? I’ve looked at Cabellas and just gotten confused.

Thanks for the tip. I am about to get out and look at seeds to see I can find any left; I am looking for some Georgia Collards for fall.

We had some fresh picked tomato/cucumber/onion salad last weekend at a family reunion. It was great, one of my favorites.

I just ran down to Walmart to see if they had any seeds left and they did. Jelly Bean grape tomato was the very first pack that my eyes saw, and next was the Georgia collards that I was wanting. I also picked up a pack of brussel sprouts. All four packs for $3. I guess that I may grow a second crop after all. And I just noticed, there was no sales tax on the seeds!

I call that a sucessful morning at the store! Other than a spilled coffee in the truck, that is. Afternoon will be spent pulling said seat from truck and cleaning it
