What is the purpose of the wire (not shown in illustration) that runs from the mast just in front of the cockpit to the top front of the vertical stabilizer?

A few years back I worked the flight line. Had a ball with incoming and outgoing air traffic. Never a dull moment.

Nope but thanks. Always interested in old planes. That wire I understand is a long wave radio antenna. Or it could be part of the ADF. Lots of GA planes have the same sort of antenna.
