What is the purpose of the wire (not shown in illustration) that runs from the mast just in front of the cockpit to the top front of the vertical stabilizer?
This morning I talked to a friend that actually flew SNJ’s durIng the late part of WWII. He also bought a few surplus BT-13’s after the war.
He told me that the SNJ’s he flew and the Bt-13’s were equipped with 2 channel HF transmitters, one channel on 3.1 MHz and one just above 7mhz. They only received on a tunable LF radio. In other words the control tower transmitted on a LF freq. while listening on the HF channels. He said normally they used the 3.1 MHz channel and control towers different LF freqs.
The LF receiver could also be used for range station navigation. So in this case the antenna was used as both a HF and LF antenna. That length of 3.1 or 7mhz antenna would be pretty inefficient for transmitting, but since it was for short range only it would not matter much.
Aircraft using HF for long range usually use a trailing wire antenna reeled out to 1/4 wavelength. For 7 MHz for instants this would be about 35 fe,et

aviation ping (wire thingy)
Radio aerial.
ADF. Automatic Direction Finder. The wire combined with a hoop allowed for direction sensing to AM radio transmitters (commercial stations and radio nav stations). They are consider obsolete now, but I like them...easy to navigate with, reliable, cheap, and you can listen to the game (which is important)

Good description of the puropose of the two antennas
Years ago I would use ADF to find my way back to Oklahoma City from almost anywhere since 1520 KMOA had a very strong signal.
As you say ADF’s although still in use by some are now obsollete with the advent of GPS. But I still believe that flying a NDB approach is a good exercise for learning situational awarenes. You can train a monkey to fly the other follow the needle aproaches, but you actually have to think to fly a NDB approach.
It’s for hanging wet flight suits out to dry.
Or...
A 1/4 wave tuned HF radio antenna.
:)
KMOA.... Is KOMA... used to be “The Fifty Thousand Watt Country Music Blowtorch for the Great Southwest....”
Format may have changed.
Not sure what format is now, but they have even changed call sign to KOKC.
When I worked (while in Army) evenings for KSWO in Lawton, we had to read tag lines for two commercials live.
“Bob at Big Bob's Used Cars says, “Buying a good used car is all about negotiating a good price, and we care what your wife thinks, so bring your wife down.... and we'll dicker!”
#2, “The best quality is at Cache Road Meat Market! Others may equal our low prices, but nobody can beat our meat.”
Try doing those live three times a night!
New Bronze Reno unlimited contender?
Cool
Antenna for radio reception.
It will be a dandy.
Featuring 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation.
I'd love to!
It would be my 12th outing to to the airshow and I STILL haven't seen everything!
One year I was working at Basler's for the airshow.
Best answer. Thanks. BTW, what were you doing with that redhead with the high heels, anyway?
What...when? Please tell her to run, my wife is gonna kick her ass. :)
The redhead in the link.
