Caption these hats at the Royal Ascot race
Posted on 06/17/2011 2:34:29 PM PDT by Lucky9teen
Race goers wearing ornate hats arrive for the third day, traditionally known as Ladies Day, of the Royal Ascot horse race meeting at Ascot, England, Thursday, June, 16, 2011. Ascot is celebrating its 300 years of horse racing at the Royal Racecourse, that began with Britain's Queen Anne spotting an open heath suitable for racing, the first race run in August 1711, with a prize of some 100 guineas.

Yes. That was what came to mind. I’ve also seen pics of Ascot from days gone by. “Oneupmanship” and exhibitionism have made a mockery of it.

Most likely the hats worn then at Ascot are like what you would see on women who go say to the Kentucky Derby each year in other words, a lot more simple.

The hats were covered in feathers, ribbons and big silk flowers but tastefully so. However there have been hairdos and hats in history that were ridiculous.
Like this pic. It is historically accurate. They used to put bird cages and ships in their hair when it was built that high, right in the middle of the "beehive". But not at Ascot. :-)
