Welcome To Thames Town, The Chinese Ghost City That Looks Like An English Countryside

Thames Town looks a lot like your average historic English village. There are lush green squares, classic brick homes, and even red telephone booths.

But Thames Town is not nestled in the British countryside; it's located in the northeast corner of China in Songjiang, near Shanghai.

And it didn't grow gradually over hundreds of years; it sprang up in 2006 as part of Shanghai's "One City, Nine Town" initiative, an attempt to decentralize the city.

The city is a virtual ghost town, with empty shops and unused roads.

It's a popular destination for wedding photos, according to Racked, which has a great gallery of Chinese newlyweds posing in the medieval setting.

Blogger triplefivedrew, who visited Thames Town in 2010, likened the place to the set of The Truman Show.

Why does this remind me of Nelson De Mille’s “The Charm School”?

Amazing attention to detail. Of course, (forced) labor is cheap in China. Although the articles does not mention it, the architect was Albert Speer, Jr..

Well, they have managed to capture a certain rustic aesthetic.

The window air conditioners in the Tudor mansion are a nice touch. Something tells me the Chinese aren’t going to be taking over the world.

Actually, it reminds me of the episode in Twilight Zone where these couple went to a party and passed out while driving after getting drunk only to wake up the next day to find themselves in a town that is totally empty.

They explore the entire town and occasionally here the eerie laughter of a little girl.

Won’t tell you the ending, but go watch it.

This Thames Town reminds me of that Twilight Zone episode.

Won’t tell you the ending ...

Yeah, it's good that you don't.

“... military urban-warfare training complex...” Plausible. Another thought . . .with the gender imbalance caused by the ‘one child’ policy, villages like these would provide a ‘home-like’ environment for ‘imported’ brides.

Actually it looks much better than Detroit or even most of Las Vegas

Wow, after watching it I feel very saddened for Vegas. I have always wanted to go...now, not so sure. At any rate, Reid’s pawprints are all over that decaying city. Honestly which is worse, Detroit, So.Cal or Vegas? I cannot tell anymore.
