Thames Town looks a lot like your average historic English village. There are lush green squares, classic brick homes, and even red telephone booths.
But Thames Town is not nestled in the British countryside; it's located in the northeast corner of China in Songjiang, near Shanghai.
And it didn't grow gradually over hundreds of years; it sprang up in 2006 as part of Shanghai's "One City, Nine Town" initiative, an attempt to decentralize the city.
The city is a virtual ghost town, with empty shops and unused roads.
It's a popular destination for wedding photos, according to Racked, which has a great gallery of Chinese newlyweds posing in the medieval setting.
Blogger triplefivedrew, who visited Thames Town in 2010, likened the place to the set of The Truman Show.

They explore the entire town and occasionally here the eerie laughter of a little girl.
Won’t tell you the ending, but go watch it.
This Thames Town reminds me of that Twilight Zone episode.
Yeah, it's good that you don't.
Wonder what they do with big ol Church ?
Wonder what they do with that big ol Church ?
Somethin’ strange in the neighborhood....
Who ya gonna call?
NOBODY!
“... military urban-warfare training complex...” Plausible. Another thought . . .with the gender imbalance caused by the ‘one child’ policy, villages like these would provide a ‘home-like’ environment for ‘imported’ brides.
Wow, after watching it I feel very saddened for Vegas. I have always wanted to go...now, not so sure. At any rate, Reid’s pawprints are all over that decaying city. Honestly which is worse, Detroit, So.Cal or Vegas? I cannot tell anymore.
