Harddrive Failure Start up menu is empty (No outlook express, no list of program files) but still has My Computer on it.
OS XP Home Pentium R D 2 80GHz
What’s your theory on why freezing it works?
What is telling you that? What program did you use for scanning?
The virus looks just like a Windows alert. If you clicked on something with it after the scan - there you go...
(cough)..it doesn’t sound like a virus.
Forgetting that I am MCSE certified and one of Avast’s “evnagelists” on the Avast malware forums (and former virus technician for an AV company in Los Angeles), I highly doubt this is malware. I’ve had a couple of problems and Freeper OW did not even describe what she did previous to the shutdown.
Were there “link mis-directions”, pop ups etc? System restore, F8 or it could be worse..a motherbooard problem. If it were a battery problem, then remove and simply turn on without the battery. If it turns on but blank screen, it’s MOST probably the video card. More description when she turns on the pc/laptop is needed..
Throw the SOB in a river and go on vacation.
I'm far from the expert, but degragging might be in order, then - as suggested above - run Crap Cleaner....but be aware doing that will clear all your passwords and log you out of everplace you're currently logged into.
That happened just yesterday with DJ69’s computer??? Sounds identical to what is going on with mine. Thanks for the link ray
You have what is called a Fake Alert or Fake Anti-Virus. I am 99.9% sure of this. I deal with this on a daily basis at my shop. Just sayin.
What is the make and model of your computer?
Ram or virtual memory, sounds more like you have a lot of things open. How much ram do you have? Also have you been getting blue screens? Do a ctl alt delete open the task manager go to process and sort by the most memory being used. Is the amount stable or slowly increasing, take a few min. You could be having a memory leak
That’s another thing. I cannot get task manager. ct alt delete does not work. Nothing is open except this
The freezer routine has worked several times for me too.
If it is a boot issue only, he can use the recovery console on the XP install disc, assuming the PC came with one. Many don’t have an original Windows install disc. Many manufacturers expect the owner of the PC to make the backup disc, most don’t.
You might try going into defrag to check if that is true. You probably don't want to actually defrag it until the problem is resolved, but check if the hard drive is almost full. If so, then maybe you need to remove some of the videos or other large files, because it won't work properly if the hard drive is nearly full. Save the hard files to a read/write CD if you can, or another memory device, and then delete them from the hard drive to make more room. You want to avoid running the computer with the hard drive nearly full.
how about safe mode? also you might want to do a chkdsk /f
yes that’s it
no
I wouldn’t mess with it...just restore your last good backup. You do have daily backups, right?
You might try going into defrag to check if that is true.
Degrag has nothing to do with RAM.
