Metal contracts when cold, allowing a little more room between moving parts, so you get less sticking.

sometimes when a hard drive stops working is because the disk
becomes warped, the cold can temporarely fix the problem.

Freezing a hard drive only works if the problem is it overheating cause the internal cooling system isnt working, or something like that.
