'Killer Cucumber' Bug From Spain Hits Britain
Sky News ^ | May 27, 2011 | none stated

Three people in Britain have been diagnosed with a lethal strain of E.Coli that has already killed five people in Germany.

Almost 300 people in northern Germany are in hospital and around 500 more are being tested for the infection.

Organic cucumbers from Spain are thought to be the source of the bacteria, but travellers to Germany are also being advised to avoid eating raw tomatoes and lettuce.

The Robert Koch Institute, Germany's national disease centre, said 60 cases had been reported in the last 24 hours alone, and infections have also been confirmed in Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands.

...Many of the pickers...come from various benighted and disease-ridden parts of the ME...

Meaning they don't use toilet paper but wipe with their left hand. Then pick the crop. Yum.

When I’m home my family and I shop at a local farmers market where we buy local produce in the summer months. For some reason (Freudian I guess) I shy away from stuff from say Ecuador or any SA country. I don’t know how what they fertilize with there. But then, local organic farmers use animal manure which in all probability contains e-coli. But we wash them pretty good.

You shouldn’t be afraid to buy south of the border produce. The American SW is our largest market area for freight & thus we know the process it goes through before it enters the states. The majority of the produce that comes from south of the border is from US produce giants, not foreign entities. Thus the product is heavily regulated by the USDA prior to entering the US. Take it up with DC & the AG Dept as to why the south of the border produce fields are replacing the American SW fields. But do not blame the American companies for taking advantage of politically friendlier growing regions/countries. The central Cali valley in some areas is becoming a wasteland thanks to govt regulation. Well, that and the enviromentalists & animal rights activists whom they worship.

Which is why I only eat veggies in season and from my own garden.

I remember when it was reported that central Cal. was producing almost 80% of the veggies for the US.

I was out there in late Jan, early Feb this year & was appalled at what I saw happening. Perfectly good tree groves & fields plucked &/or tilled under. In some fields the trees were still laying there with produce hanging off of them. It must have torn the farmers heart out to have to do that. We have a good friend there who has pulled over 1/2 of his orange grove due to lack of water & govt regulation. Since he is very close to retirement & his son is not interested, I'm sure it won't be long before the rest of his crop follows suit. Right now, all he is keeping going is what the Mennonite Colonies here in SD needs annually.

One easy guarantee of cleanliness is a several minute soak in food grade H2O2. It needs to be a 50% diluted wash of H2O2. (Just don't get that stuff undiluted on your skin.. it hurts!)

But it will get rid of all bacteria. Oh, and once the soak is done and the food is rinsed off, it pretty much is gone with NO harmful effects if ingested. What manufactured chemical can claim that?

None.

Yes it is an EPA travesty what is going on in Cali farm corridor. The Endangered Species Act needs to be repealed!

H2O2

H2O2, is hydrogen peroxide. Food grade unlike the H2O2 sold at local drug stores does not have the "stabilizers" that ARE poisonous and can leave chemicals on the food. Do not use "drug store" H2O2 on food!

Oh and it is great for praying on bath tubs, sinks, "toys", etc. When the bubbling and foaming is done, so is the bacteria.

Good move, as some of Mexico’s produce is grown in human feces, as it’s the only fertilizer they have.

Cut it like 50% and put in a spray bottle. See my follow up for suggestions and usage. I just put about 1 oz in the sink to rinse berries and fruit we pick in the woods etc, too. When the floating ones get foam that means they really did need it.

Amazing how dirty food you get in grocery stores is. Oh, and just a tip/warning if you use it on meat it will chemically "cook" and brown the meat. But it IS NOT truly cooked and still needs to be cooked.

Also we take a small spray opaque plastic bottle (seal VERY tight, but do not subject to heat.. after all H2O2 is a main component of most rocket fuel!) with you to spray in hotel room sinks, toilets etc. Surprising how foamy hotel sinks, spigots, toilet handles are. Meaning they are germie! But when you spray again and no foam that means germs are gone.

Do NOT get directly on clothes or fabrics. It will burn and destroy most. including many man made fabrics if not cut right. Germs are gone but so is the fabric. But I use a couple of onces in a germy load of clothes as a pre-soak. Pour in soak water, not directly on clothes.

Store in a opaque bottle or in refridge to keep out of sunlight. Sunlight destroys and lessens the strength of O2H2.

few months later we found out they stored their food in the bathroom (in the tub) and used the backyard as a latrine!

Urp! I'm sure horrendous hygiene is still the case with the Moroccan laborers.
