As newly minted princess Kate Middleton greeted Michelle Obama in the ornate surroundings of Buckingham Palace Tuesday, it was hard to believe she was wearing a $340 dress from British retailer Reiss — a frock any commoner could buy.
Middleton’s appearance in the nude-hued “Shola” dress sparked a shopping frenzy, causing the retailer’s Web site to crash and the dress to immediately sell out. And now style watchers are hailing the Duchess of Cambridge as “the pauper’s princess” — the first stylish royal to embrace affordable trends, and the perfect recession-era symbol.

I used to think I’d never want to be twenty-five again. Then I saw Kate and Pippa Middleton.

I think you've nailed it. The shoes are, too. Who wears metallic shoes in the middle of the day, unless it's something uber-dressy, like a wedding?
My point is that Michelle’s dress is 60 years out of style and styled for a teenager. Also, as someone else pointed out — appropriate for a dressy evening occasion, not for an afternoon affair. The fabric is too shiny for afternoon.
Is she wearing hose? Those legs look bare and hairy. Compare them to Kate’s.
I do and so do many of the ladies of my circle, but they aren't necessarily in the "Touch of Nina" area. I actually think casual metalics set off otherwise dull clothes quite well.
This is actually one of the better outfits Michelle has worn, and it's better for her shape than some of the others, but the blue material is really more suited for evening.
$340 seems like a lot of money for any dress.
No, Michelle’s not wearing hose. It’s hard to tell whether Kate is, but I’d guess not.
Duchess Camilla had nylons on, and a smart outfit, too. Aside from her inexplicable lust for Prince Charles, I think she’s rather neat.
Oh come now. MO’s dress isn’t that bad. But she is overdressed compared to the Princess’s understated elegance.

Moochelle looks like a low priced street walker in that weird outfit! Her shoes look like she is ready to do a pole dance, and yet the dress? appears to be made from heavy curtain material that belongs in a Stage Curtain! TACKY, TACKY! and Absolutely Classless! Moochelle is an Embaressment that keeps rearing that ugly body!YUK!
I thought it looked like Kate was wearing hose — elegant, sheer hose.
I can’t fathom Charles’ inexplicable lust for Camilla! I cannot look at that man without hearing his voice on a phone call (recorded by an aide) telling Camilla that he longed to be her tampon! He was still married to Diana at the time.
I don’t know how any British citizen could respect him as their monarch. Hopefully Elizabeth will live a long, long time and the crown will pass directly to William.

Well, her dress does looks like one an insecure teenager would wear to a sorority tea in athe l940’s.

Kate could have absolutely nothing on and would be stunningly beautiful and outclass MOOCH-elle by Infinity to the Infinite Power!!!! :-)
