It was the flash of the Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator

Ah-HA! So Harold Camping was right. He just had the wrong solar system.

Shellfish? When I saw mention of a flare of crabs, I thought of something else.
To quote Richard Prior:
"They say the crabs don't cause you to bleed. Well, they do if you give them to me."

The Crab Nebula is 6,500 LIGHT YEARS from Earth. If the flares we are now observing left the Crab Nebula 6,500 years ago, we actually have NO idea what is happening there NOW! What’s happening there NOW will not become visible on Earth for 6,500 years! I think LONG before that, the scriptures of Ezekiel, Daniel and Revelation will have come to pass, and The Redeemed will be going sightseeing to such locales as the Crab Nebula on Day Trips! ;oD

Why does the Crab Nebula flare? No one is sure. Same as crab grass. No matter how many times you kill it, it just pops up AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Many flareups can be traced to shellfishness.
