What began as an exercise to help college students in Wisconsin master the Hmong language is now an annual test of suspense and nerves in St. Paul.
"It's taken on a life of its own," said Tzianeng Vang, founder of the Minnesota Hmong Spelling Bee.
Now in its fourth year, the bee is set for Saturday at Concordia University in St. Paul.
Students from nine schools in the Twin Cities -- the most since the bee began -- will compete for a traveling plaque and bragging rights.
Most important, the bee gives them practice pronouncing Hmong words, something many first- and second-generation children struggle with, Vang said.
"A lot of the Hmong students know how to speak it, but they have a hard time enunciating it," he said. "The spelling bee, it forces you to enunciate each letter."

How about.....
AN ENGLISH SPELLING BEE!!!!
I wonder if they do this in Fresno. There are a lot of Hmong folks there.
It seems like English spelling bees are also usually won by immigrants. Just to prove a point, it didn't take long to find this article about a Hmong kid who was the winner in an English spelling bee.
He’ll get further here than those who choose to not speak and spell in English.
Good for him!
I have absolutely NO problems with this.
Why?
From the article it’s a privately organized event being held at a Lutheran university.
So if they want to hold a Hmong spelling bee on their own time and their own dime....good for them.
I don’t know about spelling, but the Hmong were good allies, soldiers and paid a terrible price for helping us in Laos on the Plain of Jars. They kicked the Pathet Lao Commies butts.
Vang Pao was a leader. We helped him with the likes of Tony Poe, Pop Buelle and Bill Lair.
I am glad some of them made it here, a lot died on the way.
I met a Hmong guy at dialysis who worked with the US in Vietnam. He had some harrowing stories of his escape across Laos to Thailand after the Dems forced us to bail. What a brave man!
Known some of the Hmong; VERY good folks.
