I would like to send hard copies of my recently-published book How to Mend a Broken World to friends in the Turkish Republic. It's a small (8 x 5.25 inch, 200 page) paperback book.
What's the cheapest way to mail this item?
Thanks, FRiends!
IBTZ?
Gosh, you hardly got here and you are pimping a book?
You can’t mail it... the world is broken.
If this is in any way offensive, please accept my apology. I’m simply pinging my favorite trusted source with a request for information.
Thank you,
Thanks, FRiend!
You’re a Ph.D. and published author and you don’t know how to ship a book to Turkey? The link to your book totally gave you away as well.
There is this new thing called Google you can look stuff up there. Its really cool
I admit, there are gaps in my education. Hence, a meek appeal to a trusted source seemed to be in order.
I was wary of how you posted, but your response was very cordial to a Freeper, respectful. My buddy owns Ebay and Amazon accounts and there’s only one thing he learned after 10 years when shipping overseas from America...
That UPS and Fedex are a blatant rip-off and too expensive while USPS (love em or hate em’) is the cheapest when tracked and insured. Our company here in Hollywood ships to Europe and Japan and USPS is the most affordable. Priority Mail works for us because we also provide a tracking number to our Japanese business partners, and insured as well.
send it air mail. Since it is a book you can get a book rate.

(Look them all up if you are newbie - it will fill in your educational gaps.)
Surface rate is verrrry slow, like a month, minimum. Cheap tho!
You will want to send it “PRINTED MATTER.”
Your friendly Post Officer will stamp it for you and you may not need to fill out a customs form.
Allow a month.
If you don’t need it there in a hurry, USPS Parcel Post is the cheapest but it will probably take 3 or 4 weeks.
USPS Priority Mail will get it there in less than a week but it will cost slightly more.
If it weighs under 4 pounds, ship it by First Class Mail International. It’s much cheaper than Priority Mail International.
Surface Mail was discontinued a number of years ago by the U.S. Postal Service.
Book Rate was discontinued back in 2002.
Shipping heavy items like books has been a challenge for eBay sellers since the discontinuation of surface mail and book rate for international packages.
FedEx and UPS are usable only when you need to send important documents pretty fast; then their tracking systems keep you in the loop. But their services are very expensive.
In 2004, I went book shopping with someone from Brazil at Half-Price Books. She bought a huge quantity of books, and shipped them home from the US post office in bags provided by the Post Office. It was very cheap, but took awhile.
