British scientist Stephen Hawking has branded heaven a "fairy story" for people afraid of the dark, in his latest dismissal of the concepts underpinning the world's religions.
The author of 1988 international best-seller "A Brief History of Time" said in an interview with The Guardian published on Monday that his views were partly influenced by his battle with motor neurone disease.
"I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first," he told the newspaper.
"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark."

Since Hawking is a scientist, I eagerly await his documented, published, peer-reviewed and replicated experiment.
Every true scientist knows that one can’t definitively claim anything without following that process.
I would also question the “brilliant” part... although one must admit Hawking has a wildly cruel imagination if it were so...

Since, Hawking is so fixated on attempting to rattle the faith masses, I believe he has yet to make his peace with the God he is so bent on disproving in the back of his mind.
Otherwise, he would not care to touch the subject so readily.
There are no atheists on a sinking ship though, guaranteed.

He’s just pissed because he’s paralyzed.
You make it sound as if believing in God is just a matter of choosing to believe. Isn’t it more than that? How can someone just decide to believe in something where there is no real proof, at least proof that doesn’t require belief in something else?
Or the Cave Allegory for that matter.
Eventually he will probably come to realize the limitations of the mind of Man. There are things he can't possibly comprehend. None of us can.

Before I found Christ this would have disturbed me, now I just 100% feel sorry for him....he simply does not know, and his ego will not allow him the “Blind Faith” needed to find out.
Since the computer is used as an analogy, we say that the computer is a physical thing. It is built from dust, and one day it will return to dust. Now what is software but consciousness in another form? Can you touch it? Once it is placed in a computer, it animates it, when it is gone, the computer is no more. We are in our essence software, living within hardware. It is really quite simple. Who wrote that software, we cannot say for certain, but it does exist.
Hawking’s problem is not acknowledging that he was not the “creator” of his own mind. In other words, there is no greater than himself. Such vanity.
The real messed up part is, How long has he been affected by Lou Gehrig’s disease? I am willing to admit that by now he is either senile, or forgets the fact that not many people with his condition actually make it all that long. It won’t just be a matter of acknowledging that Jesus is the savior, there would also be some serious thankfulness deserved as well, for how his life turns out, or has turned out. I am personally concerned that I do not give God enough credit or thanks throughout my life when he really deserves it, and that’s my two cents.

Looking at it another way: He is one of the most gifted (from the standpoint of raw intelligence) people who has ever lived. He has made many contributions to our understanding of the universe. He has flatly stated that he thinks he has more contributions to make and that he is not ready to die. He has managed to survive for a long time with a disease that normally kills within 3-5 years of diagnosis.
Should he REALLY be so certain there is no higher power out there watching out for him?
Just remember that we have been created for Eternity, not just for this brief learning period we call Time. God has bigger plans for you than merely the Here & Now, if you are willing to accept Him.
Hawking is a brilliant thinker, but one cannot understand the Universe without accepting tutoring from its Creator. Just ask Newton, Kelvin, Faraday, Boyle, Copernicus, Kepler and so on.
