SACRAMENTO, Calif. Gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people would be added to the lengthy list of social and ethnic groups that public schools must include in social studies lessons under a landmark bill passed Thursday by the California Senate. If the bill is adopted by the state Assembly and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, California would become the first state to require the teaching of gay history. Supporters say the move is needed to counter anti-gay stereotypes and beliefs that make children in those groups vulnerable to bullying and suicide. Opponents counter that such instruction would further burden an already crowded curriculum and expose students to a subject that some parents find objectionable. The legislation, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco, passed on a 23-14 party line vote. It also would add disabled people to the curriculum. Appealing to colleagues for support, Leno said gay children still struggle routinely with verbal and physical abuse at school, even though society is more accepting than when he was a gay youth in the 1960s. "We are second-class citizens and children are listening," he said. "When they see their teachers don't step up to the plate when their classmate is being harassed literally to death, they are listening and they get the message that there is something wrong with those people." Republican Sen. Doug La Malfa of Butte opposed the bill. "I'm deeply troubled kids would have to contemplate at a very, very early age, when many of us are teaching abstinence ... what is sexuality," he said. California law already requires schools to cover the contributions to the state and nation of women, African Americans, Mexican Americans, entrepreneurs, Asian Americans, European Americans, American Indians and labor.

There is only one significant historical event that I can think of that is relevant....
Sodom & Gamorra
California is soooo finished.
Anyone with half a brain w/school-age children should get out of CA.
Everyone knows they will deliver by being asked politely or after a beatdown ~ take your pick.
This "first lesson" could go on and on and on. I doubt it's what it's designers had in mind, but there are some real possibilities here ~ things that will keep ALL of them out of national politics.
....And as parents have long feared, promotion of homosexual sex is not far behind. As the Illinois Family Association recently reported, GLSEN’s Facebook page recently published links to explicit sites for “gay” hook-ups for kids. The page disappeared shortly after pro-family groups publicized it, but you can see the PDF of it HERE.

Also, back in 2007 and 2009, the MassResistance blog documented GLSEN-Boston’s MySpace postings of pornograhic images, and links to adult homosexuals.)

Is Brokeback Mountain a mandatory view? Wild West gay history. :-)
Fine. Let them talk about how Gaetan Dugan brought AIDS (or as it was known at the time, GRIDS) to N. America.
I’m certain the students will be taught that homosexuals are the most intelligent, kindest, compassionate, tolerant and best-looking people in the world...that they invented fire, the wheel, sliced white bread, Preparation H, hula hoops and the internet...oooops, I forgot, Algore invented that.
correction....Dugas.
Will it include the clergy abuse cases?
As the women in the 2008 Boston Dyke March chanted:
“Ten percent is not enough! Recruit! Recruit! Recruit!”

Math, science, calculus scores are down. Students dropping out.
Solution? Teach about being a fudgepacker. Thank gawd we have our priorities straight.
What exactly is “gay history”?
If its the story of the homosexual rights movement in this country, it might have some value- particularly to California students who see open homosexuality all around them 24/7, enough to spend an hour or two on at most.
But if it is repeating the historical innuendos that figures like Alexander the Great, Michaelangelo or King James of the bible were “gay” heroes, it reduces the idea of history to the level of the National Enquirer.
I guess they are going to have to find a gay version of black Revolutionary War soldier Crispus Attucks to feature.Possibly come up with the gay brigade under Washington’s command. In addition to the Asian brigade and labor union brigade.
I could give that gay history lesson in about 5 minutes. How much does the job pay? Do I get collective bargaining rights, heath care and a pension?
