I was messing around ( on someone else's thread ) and suddenly got nostalgic for my influences from the 70's and thought about my absolute favorite cover in the world, a song that I would never tire of....

Here it is...

A well mastered CD is worth its weight in gold these days. Do you remember the half-speed cut vinyl?

I remember them well, but in my younger days, I never bought any because my stereo equipment wasn't all that great to begin with.

I wound up shoveling all of my spare cash into guitars, amps, and recording equipment instead. What days those were...

Young folks these days have no idea what incredible audio really sounds like. The state of the art back in the analog days could make your heart soar, and your eyes weep. I'm glad I was there to experience those times.

“People get Ready”, with Jeff Beck. Yeah it is Rod Stewart singing, but Beck is DA MAN. Original by The Impressions, 1965.

Here’s a fantastic cover of an average Tin Pan Alley tune I discovered just yesterday. Ray Charles (with Billy Preston): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIvlrCSiK9s

Ray Charles with Billy, for a ham-fisted wannabe piano pounder like me, this is pure heaven :)

Absolutely the best Ray Charles performance I have seen. With the fabulous Raelettes, and I think the bassist as the only other musician playing (though not heard by my ears.)

“Green Grass of Home” by Mike Farris. If you don’t get misty watching and listening to this, you are a soulless automoton.

You bet, partner. You’re gonna love those two albums. They represent the very best of Jimi’s live performances.

After bumping into Juliette Valduriez’ videos by accident, I watched a bunch of her stuff. Apparently, she’s been playing music since she was a small child, which is why she makes it look so easy.

Ok, back at ya, here’s my favorite Billy Preston cover, Summertime, just jaw-dropping virtuosity:

And a nice Ray Charles cover (the album version of this is just strange... they sped up the mix so it sounds like Ray is half-chipmunk):

Oops. Just realized you’re looking for studio covers. Sorry. Still a cool version.

Naturally, I wondered who cut the drum track... wouldn’t surprise me if she did. She’s a gift.

Fine performances. I noticed from watching the Ray Charles videos that he liked to have the bass player nearby, right behind him.

And about Billy Preston, Keith Richards writes in his autobiography, that on one of the RS tours, he nearly punched Billy in the mug for turning up the volume on his organ so that no one else could be heard.
