I once used a large mop head on a HUGE snake on my back porch here in Florida. My daughter sat down on a chair out there and started screaming for me to come out. She first saw the snake after it crawed through her legs on the floor.

It only took a few whacks to kill it, the first whack merely stunned it but that was enough for me to finish it off before it recovered.

My dad was once bitten by a copperhead when he was very young and he survived with no problem.

I personally despise snakes and I will take no chances with them especially where my family and pets are concerned.

I share your feeling about snakes, I despise them too. None of us, adults or children have been bitten. A small dog of ours was bitten on the nose by a copperhead. It got pretty sick but survived without treatment.

Vibrant colors-great saturation. What gear do you use again?

Used to have a great film SLR with super lenses, but haven’t taken the plunge to a digital SLR yet, mainly due to cost, but prices are coming down.

I was looking at some pictures I took with that SLR in Yellowstone and Glacier NP’s and I realized I really missed having an SLR.

Saving up to get one. Any pointers?

My DSLR is a Sony Alpha A200. It will use all the old Minolta Maxxum autofocus lenses, that makes great quality glass affordable.

Any DSLR which is currently listed should provide more than adequate quality.

Don’t get caught up in number of pixels tho the larger numbers can produce slightly better images but only in very big enlargements.

If you already have af lenses there is a good chance your new DSLR will work with them, at least in part. For example Minolta Maxxum af lenses will work just fine on Sony bodies.

The Nikon D90 will work with older Nikon AF lenses which do not have built-in motors but the cheaper Nikon bodies will not except maybe in manual focus mode.

They are a most impressive snake when they are lunging toward you

I was bringing a welsh pony back across the river..He would go commune with the neighbor's cows. He started swimming really fast. I noticed we were being pursued by about five water moccasins, and they were closing in fast. I pulled up my legs, and scooted up his neck. I was practically on the poor pony's head by the time we finished crossing the river.
Not sure which of us was more freaked out.

Used to call them Hoover Hogs during the depression...

People ate them? I thought they carried leprosy. I made the kids wash-up real good when they showed up in my back yard with that critter. There are miles and miles of 'pine plantations' abutting my property. They always exploring back there and bringing home their finds.

Good point about the lens. I have a very good 28-135 ISM lens for my Canon EOS SLR (Elan IIE). Not a pro lens, but highly rated. I splurged on it. Also have several filters, sunshade, and cap for it.

Great basic lens for lots of settings. Only problem with it is it’s so large in diameter (72, I think) that indoors you get a shadow with the on camera flash. So I used a supplementary flash which is better all around anyhow-just bulky.

I would strongly consider a Canon for that reason.

Wonder if the flash I have would work on a Canon DSLR?

When I was a kid, about 10 in 1958, I almost got bit by one of those snakes (Water Moccasin) when I was fishing with my uncle - who was about 20 yards down the bank. Luckily a stranger saw it coming at me and killed the thing with a HUGH Rock. It was about 7 ft away from me then.

btw: This proves that everything you read in Wiki is NOT true. They say they're not up in Northern IL - well, bull. My buds and I saw another one around '73 while fishing. Thing swam across the river and slithered into the woods. It was about 30 yds downstream.

No spring pics yet for me. I have some Flower Pics from last fall I'll be uploading to Photobucket later, I'll PING ya.

I sometimes swim in our Florida creeks and rivers, and I’m way more afraid of mocassins than gators.

We went hiking thru my 10 acres of woods and creeks yesterday. I knew there would be a chance we would see a cotton mouth or coral snake...but luckily we didn’t see a one. Thankfully (E. Texas)

Well, I love the snake the best! Did you get any moon pix? We went out last night and got some of the moon, man it was so red rising up over the beach! :)

One of the tricks we use in the desert to kill snakes is to slowly move your gun barrel back and forth. The barrel usually being a warmer thing than the back round so they follow it with their head. When you get them synched up you just pull the trigger.
