When the Cottonmouth Mocassins come out you know it's really Spring!
Found a coral snake in my backyard in Honduras — they live in the nearby pineapple fields. Pretty frightening sight, but not nearly as frightening as a water mocassin in my opinion. Coral snakes flee. Mocassin’s attack.
the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
We’re in eastern New Mexico. Our place is above a creek, and truly rattlesnake heaven. We have to be alert from now until October...I carry a .38 or Judge, almost all the time.
We have a variety, but mostly coontails, not nearly as aggressive as your cottonmouth.

Looks like a little Spring surprise amongst the dead leaves—very colorful!
Yeah the spring peepers are going now and that’s always a sure sign. The mergansers are on the lake too. They stop for a week or two on their way north.

A guy I knew in the Navy made a really big deal about buying himself a brand new shiny, sparkly black bass boat, and the very first time he took it out fishing in the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia, he was trolling along the bank and some sort of snake dropped into the boat.
Dumbo draws his Colt .45 and blows three nice holes through the bottom of his brand new boat, but mortally wounding the snake in the process.
He didn’t sink before he got back to the dock but he did get wet, we laughed at him about it and showed no mercy for a long time...
He is lucky the Pungo Witch didn’t get him.
She’s down there in Chesapeake somewhere near the old Hiney Winery isn’t she...???
I do not know her exact whereabouts in the swamp but I always thought it strange that she was the next door neighbor of the Virginia Commonswealths Attorney who prosecuted her for witchcraft.
I always suspected he was a spurned lover but that is just a guess.
A sharp hoe is good for killing snakes but I prefer a sharp shovel. I have broken a hoe handle when coming down on a snake but a shovel always works. I am pretty much a live and let live kind of girl but I just love to kill snakes!
The only critters I get edgy about walk on 2 legs, the rest are pretty predictable.
My Mother preferred killing rattlers with a hoe. Daddy would cut a springy long switch and kill them by hitting them sort of like a whip. It would easily break their back.
I much prefer a .22 auto with only a 3 inch barrel. It is a copy of the Walther PP made in Hungary and is both accurate and reliable. I typically keep a .22 shot shell in the chamber. It always hits them hard enough to stop them then I finish them off with a .22 36-40 grain bullet. They are for some reason pretty easy to hit in the head.
I have killed rattlesnakes in south Texas with a deer rifle, wouldn’t want to use a shovel or a hoe on them. Here I find only copperheads and coral snakes. We used to live in Brazoria County on Oyster Creek, lots of water moccasins and copperheads there. We built a house on land that had never been cleared before and I had to kill off the snakes to keep my babies safe. I got very good at it.
