There is a write up on wiki about Larry Shaw, the creator of Pi Day. I think if you do a search of Pi Day you can find it. There is a long explanation of today and the next Pi Day.

Why should the ratio of a circles circumference to its diameter be an irrational number? Its certainly not an irrational concept. It's even worse than irrational; it's transcendental.
