Next time you head down to your local supermarket, you may be taking your health into own hands literally.
New research shows that nearly three out of four shopping cart handles are rife with fecal bacteria, including some that can cause severe illness.
Dr. Victoria Millett, a local infectious disease specialist, tells KFWBs Maggie McKay researchers actually found more fecal bacteria on grocery cart handles than you would typically find in a bathroom.
Professor Charles Gerba, the lead researcher in the University of Arizona study, took samples from the handles of 85 carts across four states for bacterial contamination.
Gerba says 72 percent of the carts tested positive for fecal bacteria, with up to half the samples containing Escherichia coli, otherwise known as E. coli.

Many grocery stores have disinfectant wipes at entry points. I use them.
How disgusting. People need to take their wipes and use them before handling a cart. One of our local grocers provides them at the entrance, and I always use them.
yuk
GROSS!
I totally HATE those shopping cart handles!
So I guess now instead of just bringing our own bags, we have to bring our own cart too?
The major grocery stores in our area have wipes freely available where you pick up your cart.
That being said, the rule at our house has always been to wash your hands as soon as you get home from the store BEFORE your put the food away.
It’s amazing I survived being a grocery store clerk at the A&P in my youth.
Many grocery stores where I live have empty disinfectant wipe dispensers at entry points.
Ugh, I have to go to the store...and to top it off it’s one of those stores you bring your reusable bags or stick groceries in empty boxes from the shelf that can be bug infested.
remember to wipe the little autocar portion too...
People, lave las manos!
later
That’s a hard and fast rule here, too.
And if you’re going to use the reusable shopping bags, wash them often.
Studies show those things get nasty.
And don’t put food on the little kiddie seat. Its handy, but totally gross (grocery stores and little kids).
Here in Key West the cart likely held all of sseveral homeless persons' possessions within the past 30 days
Do you think that could be an issue?
What next mandatory cart washes after each use?
.
I can’t imagine how I’ve survived this long.
Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop taking a massive dump in my shopping cart.
In all seriousness, kids should be banned from riding in the carts. I don’t care where mama puts her brood, but don’t plot their poopy behinds in my grocery cart.
"..and people thought it odd I hum the theme from 12 O'clock High when standing upon the store toilet"
