Arlington police have arrested and charged a 24-year-old man in connection with the fatal church attack that left a pastor dead and his assistant severely injured.
Records show that Steven Lawayne Nelson, 24, was booked into the Arlington city jail Saturday afternoon. He was charged with capital murder.
Authorities initially believed that Nelson was in Dallas but then they got word that he was headed back to his apartment in Arlington where he lived with his mother. Members of the U.S. Marshals fugitive task force were called in to help with taking him into custody.
Earlier today, officials spotted someone they believed to be Nelson go inside the apartment. Police then surrounded the apartment. Law officers then saw him on a back patio, which was surrounded by a high fence.
Nelson spotted law officers and then ran back inside the apartment. He initially refused to come out, but ultimately a member of the task force convinced him to voluntarily surrender.
Authorities also recovered the assistants Mitsubishi Galant that was taken by the attacker or attackers during Thursdays slaying at the NorthPointe Baptist Church in North Arlington.
Arlington police were still searching Saturday for additional clues in the death of the Rev. Clint Dobson, who was found dead about 4 p.m. Thursday inside the NorthPointe Baptist Church in the 2000 block of Brown Boulevard. Dobsons assistant, Judy Elliott, was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth where she was recovering from her injuries. Elliott was listed in stable condition.
On Saturday, authorities stormed a unit at the Woodbridge townhomes, just a few blocks for the NorthPointe church on Brown Boulevard. Richard confirmed that they detained one person there, but declined to release additional information.

Steven Lawayne Nelson, 24, lived with his mother. In other words, a welfare free loader.
“Lawayne”
Does the Wayne/Lee/Ray rule apply for a Lawayne?
Lawayne...hmmm...isn’t that of Swedish origin?
Bail’s $695.10. (The bail was set for a speeding ticket, not the capital murder).

Why no photograph. If this person has a drivers license then a photograph should be available.
Arlington’s city jail site does not have that capability and he’s not been transported to Tarrant County yet (which is a bit surprising).
No bail for Capital Murder.
And Texas has a speed lane to the Jesus juice. Don’t these people think before they kill?
I was actually referring to the news outlet’s failure to procure a photograph from drivers licenses. I know they can pull that up without going through the police.
At first I thought this was about Phelps group.
Lawayne?
Do they just make up these names?
Probably. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the white trash from the black trash.
I live in the South and sometimes when I look around I feel so depressed. There are many people here (particularly rural whites and inner city blacks) who need to hear the Word of the Lord and nobody is telling it to them and making them into moral, free, adult human beings.
I don’t know whether this guy was just a violent thug picking on people he thought would be easy targets or an undiagnosed nutcase flipping out for some reason that nobody will ever know. But I do know that trash is only trash until it is touched by God. These people have not understood that they are human beings made in the Image and Likeness of God and that God’s Son died to save them (that is, bring them out of the darkness and confusion and into the light of faith and understanding and hence make them fully human for eternity).
It’s very tragic that the two people he attacked probably were trying to do this very thing.
If you read the police booking you will notice he has no valid DL. Perhaps that’s the reason of no pic.
Ping.
Huh. I read the article but didn’t pick up that fact. Thanks for mentioning it.
What you said is true and needs to be said.
Unfortunately in NJ we just had a pastor arrested in the stabbing of a fellow pastor in her home. Eighteen years ago he had broken into his wife’s apartment and stabbed her.
So even the word of God has trouble getting through to a vengeful and impulsive person.
True story. My wife was in the hospital with our first baby. She shared a room with a woman who said the nurses had named her baby. She said “The bracelet on her arm says her name is ‘Fee-mal-ee’.” (female)
Another woman said she got her boy’s name from the sleepware section of the Sears catalog. Her son’s name was “Pa-ja-mus” (pajamas).
(sigh)
It is sad. And no improvement in sight. For all races in public school.
