Weekly Gardening Thread – 2011 (Vol. 09) March 04

Good morning gardeners. It is finally March and in Central Mississippi it has come in like a Lamb so far, does that mean it will go out like a Lion?

People used to believe that bad spirits could affect the weather adversely, so they were cautious as to what they did or did not do in certain situations. Those beliefs often included ideas that there should be a balance in weather and life. So, if a month came in bad (like a lion), it should go out good and calm (like a lamb).

I am still waiting for my tomato seeds to germinate. I am not worried about them yet as they take 14 – 21 days. A couple of my squash seeds have sprouted. Time to get the garden ready and my soil tested. The testing only costs $6.00 at the county extension. Regular tests include: pH, Lime Requirement, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, and Sodium.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

I love salsa in any color just so it has some “flavor” spicy. I also love habenero sauced bbqd chicken with a bit of a sweet taste. Loverly.

Take strips of the white edge of the newspapers. Make a flour paste and dot the paste on the newspaper strips according to the directions on the seed packages. With a pair of tweezers drop a seed onto the flour paste, let dry, plant according to the package directions.

No-o-o-o-o-o-o-o! You couldn’t give away your ‘how-to-restart-civilization-books-after-the-SHTF’ could you? I just can’t understand the minds of some people . . .

Lessee . . . roots on the wane and surface stuff on the wax. OK. Do she believe it? Do you?

Got the pruning done on the apple trees and the asparagus patch cleared off for my parents today.

Got some sunchokes dug in my garden. Pulled the plastic off the hoop tunnel for the first time since last fall. Have one of the most beautiful stand of wintered over greens I've ever raised, and the carrots and green onions survived well too. NOTHING beats the flavor of early spring greens.

Some pics:

1) Look down the row under the hoops

2) First half of the greens row.

3) Bloomsdale spinach

4) Large leaf corn salad

I think so. I think lavender likes cooler, moist climates but am not sure. All I check for when I buy plants is that they are hardy in my zone.

It will take a long time for the lavender to get to a respectable size to make a hedge. It is somewhat slow growing.

I am not aware of whether or not garlic will help with black spot.

I just put mine in the garden and keep it weeded and mulched.

Your welcome for the info..potato is a good root plant..as far a the ladybug like beetle they get, the first 24 hours after they hatch out they are soft bodied until their shell hardens...I found them easier to pick off once the shell hardened....

Given how easily our store bought potatoes sprout, I’d say whatever the stores supposedly are using to keep them from sprouting doesn’t work well enough to worry about.

Thank you. He’s doing quite well — working full days now. He starts radiation treatment Monday for about 5-6 weeks.

They like to practice on string cheese. I take a couple of sticks and strip ‘em into thin pieces, then go out and watch them do a cheese scrum...it’s hilarious! The worm scrum today was priceless....

Yes most definitely she believes it and most of the old timers (now gone) swore by it. I know a guy who bought the ranch of one of those OT’s and he continues the practice. He has a yard maintenance business and I’ll ask him if I can remember...

I made it across I-90 again last week with only a minor delay just east of Rapid City to wait for the snow plow to run.

Notorious trouble spot. Glad you had a safe trip.

I just watered my two flats of seedlings. Yup, they are up already. I need to trim my pear tree this weekend. I noticed some flowers are appearing and leaves are starting to green out.

Just the containers that hold the flour and sugar. The sifter mechanisms would still be metal.

Thanks for the reply and interest. Believe me, we don’t dismiss experience and/or wisdom (from days gone by) out of hand. Don’t feel obligated to research for us, though.

This project will go through the season and get put into final form in the fall and winter. The science fair is in January, 2012. Thanks again!

We have a new neighbor who is a landscaper. I’m going to ask him about topping my wild peach tree. I want it closer to the ground so we can get some of the peaches, which are very small but so sweet and juicy. Last year we had a tree full of fruit, ripe, juicy then the high wind came along and you know the rest of the story. We shoveled them into a wheel barrel and threw them away. It was sickening.

Well, we don't know how radiation will affect him, so we may go backwards for a while. He's actually working more than full days. It's Saturday and we're in here at work right now, and he went back to work last night too for about 3 hours.

We had one problem yesterday, however. He's misplaced his wallet -- not that that has never happened before! I hope that it's just general absent mindedness and nothing to do with the surgery. (keeping fingers crossed)
