VICHY FRANCE: France has capitulated to Japan’s ultimatum to accept its proposals for settlement of the border dispute between its colony in Indochina and Thailand.
The Vichy cabinet’s decision in the early hours of this morning came only hours after the Japanese ultimatum expired. Throughout yesterday Japan made it clear that it was ready to implement its proposals by force if necessary.
When the agreement is signed Indochina will cede to Thailand all of Laos west of the Mekong and an important part of north-western Cambodia. Japan wants military bases in southern Indochina and Thailand, and expects to capitalise on its intervention by making a military pact with Thailand.

Day 547 February 28, 1941
At 11.30 AM, British liner SS Anchises (damaged yesterday by a Fw200 from I./KG 40) is slowly sinking in 40 foot seas. The remaining 33 crew abandon ship in a lifeboat after corvette HMS Kingcup arrives to rescue them but the lifeboat is sucked under Kingcups bow (12 killed). In the afternoon, SS Anchises is sunk in another bombing attack.
Operation Abstention is abandoned. HMS Decoy and HMS Hereward land 200 more British troops on the island of Castelorizo but Italians have 2 torpedo boats (Lupo and Lince), 2 destroyers (Crispi and Sella) and 2 MAS torpedo motorboats in the area with more soldiers on board. British decide to evacuate the island but 40 Commandos are left behind and captured by Italians. The disastrous operation is described by Admiral Cunningham as “a rotten business and reflected little credit to everyone”.
Kufra oasis, Sahara Desert, Southeastern Libya. After 10 days besieged by Free French forces, the Italian garrison at El Tag fort begins negotiating terms for surrender.

At 11.32 PM 200 miles South of Iceland, U-108 sinks British SS Effna (all 33 hands lost).
Overnight, 23 RAF Hampden bombers from Waddington, England, unsuccessfully attack German battleship Tirpitz at dock in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. This is the 16th raid in 7 months but Tirpitz has suffered no serious damage.
An odd story -- did they misidentify this plane?
The FW 187 was never a major factor -- only 9 ever built.
That is what the smart money says. If you want to expand your knowledge go read Larry381's reply #15 on Saturday's thread (2/26).
Is your picture a FW 187? It is hard to tell for sure but it could be the same plane as the Times photo. There was no accompanying article - just the photo and caption. It doesn't say how many were flying over, so maybe they got lucky and caught one of the very few incidents. I wonder how they came to have the photo.
Thanks for trhe heads up! I just read Larry381’s reply on that thread. Sorry I missed it the other day! While I am not around Atlanta, the location of the crash also fascinated me, just from a historical viewpoint. The crash and what happened to the survivors read like the basis of a disaster movie script to me. I never knew this true story.
