anyone know why they chose to depict the Navy/Marine Corp/Coast Guard version of the medal?
Not complaining...just curious.
To: Glenn
It looks military. It has a canon on it. Isn’t that a bit vitriolic?

Both are excellent.
But I have to say the silver dollar is emotionally moving. Seeing a soldier carrying his buddy (we assume to safety) is an entire vignette in a single image.

It’s only for collectors. It’s not going to infect the masses.

Where can you get these? We have two Medal of Honor recipients in the family. One from WWII and one from Viet Nam. Would love to get these for our kids and grandkids.

About $50 for the silver. Nearly $500 for the gold.

The obverse of the gold coin depicts the original design and was awarded to Navy and Army recipients alike. The Army later changed the design of their medal, in part because the insignia of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans’ organization bore a close resemblance to the Medal of Honor and they wanted a design that could be protected from imitation.
The silver coin depicts the designs of all three services. The Marine Corps uses the Navy design.

It’s a Commerative Coin. The US Mint releases these periodically, but this is the first one I’ve seen issued in GOLD. I don’t usually buy Commeratives except I did buy the Lincoln, in Proof and Circulated. Also, the Boy Scouts Commerative, also in Proof & Circulated.
The Mint needs money. Some of these coins however, increase quite rapidly in value, particularly those with a finite mintage.
