A reversal on carbs
Fat was once the devil. Now more nutritionists are pointing accusingly at sugar and refined grains.
Most people can count calories. Many have a clue about where fat lurks in their diets. However, fewer give carbohydrates much thought, or know why they should.
But a growing number of top nutritional scientists blame excessive carbohydrates not fat for America's ills. They say cutting carbohydrates is the key to reversing obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

This is impossible because the omniscient Federal Government’s Food Pyramid showed Carbohydrates like wheat at the bottom, where you’re supposed to eat the most.
Good thing they’ll be in charge of all healthcare soon!
Dr. Atkins was right - and those nice men in suits at Archer Daniels Midland who pay the campaign expenses for all our fine and noble US Senators are wrong? That can’t be so! :)
This is my experience as well. I work hard to keep the refines out of my diet (even though it is very difficult in this day and age) as I see IMMEDIATE negative effect on everything from my outlook on life to not changing a thing about my calories in/calories out and fat retention. Refined carbs for some of us are a kin to alcohol for an alcoholic. It is worth the fight though as when I am successful in turning away from them I feel exceptional in every way. It is a no brainer here. Yet it is not and easy task to keep away even for someone who works very hard at it and also has such a positive impact for doing so. Curious about others experiences with refined carbs and health overall (including weight).

The LA times is staffed by idiots. I went on the PRISM diet back in ‘97 and this was their main attack. And brother it worked. And then there is the Atkins diet with lots of meat.
And I watched a woman on TV over a decade ago explain why fried pork rinds were better for you than Doritos. And it was this same info. This is NOT new - not even close to it.
These folks sure are slow on the uptake... diets like the Southbeach and Atkins have shown this to be true for over a decade now - and many people (myself included) have used such “low-carb” diets to not only lose considerable weight, but to improve general health.
This also helps explain why low-carb diets help control diabetes
At 48 with a developed spare tire, I’m thinking of going to a low carb diet. My energy level is crap and I feel older than I am. I’ve got a pretty active lifestyle too. No gymnastics but my job requires physical movement that gets pretty heavy at times. As an HVAC serviceman, I’m always climbing on roofs, through crawlspaces, carrying equipment, etc.
Wonder if it would make a difference with my UC also.

Interesting post. My family who are probably in the middle on processed food are looking to eliminate them even further. I say “middle” because not every meal comes out of a box with 20 ingredients you can’t pronounce but still a good chunk does. We are doing it because my wife’s recent reactions to soy in products. It was an eye opener for me looking at pre-made food labels. So much chemicals, fillers, and soy in almost everything.
I know personally carbs (breads, pasta, etc.) give me horrible stomach pains but I can’t resist. I instead take the purple pill instead of changing habits. I know (from personal experience) if I can cutout the processed carbs - i will feel healthier, have more energy, and loose weight. Now to do it!
I used to get “30/30/40” power bars back in the 80’s. It was ALL about balancing the protein, fat and carbs.
I personally limit my refined carbs to hand-crafted breads, beer, rice and potatoes, with occasional pasta. No sodas, no corn syrup. I don't have a weight problem, but the family has a history of diabetes, and it just makes sense.

Are the low/no carb pastas like Dreamfields worthwhile?
A good way to limit carbs is DREAMFIELD PASTA PRODUCTS.
Wrong again. It is not carbs per se but Grains we need avoid. Vegetable and fresh fruit carbs are very healthy, and necessary in our diets, and athletes need these in quantity.
No grains are healthy at all, and it’s quite a mental hurdle to get over this, as for centuries grains have provided the bulk of humans’ calories. But they cause all leaky guts, celiac, IBS, and probably crohns. They are pure sugar, even the “whole” grains, and there is no bodily need for them at all, because nuts and seeds can provide everything theyndo, with better digestion and without the sugar.
There is room in everyone’s diet for fresh vegetable and fruit carbs. Just avoid grains.

Oh hell. I thought this would be about chucking fuel injectors and going back to Holley four-barrels....
Whenever I cut carbs from my diet, the weight starts coming off even without exercising. I started low-carb on Feb 8, and already I’ve lost 5 lbs. Of course, the minute I go back to bread, rice, potatoes, and cereal, the weight comes back on.
I started low carb a few days ago and already lost 2 lbs. I have acid reflux normally but it goes away overnight when I go low carb. My neighbor is a diabetic and eats cereal every morning (Cheerios) so he has good cholesterol. He and his wife believe eggs raise cholesterol so only eat them twice a week. They also drink low fat milk which has more sugar in it. He just went back to the Dr. for stronger diabetic medicine.
