When it became apparent that his opponent in the state tournament wrestling match would be a girl., e would be facing off against a girl, Joel Northrup, forfeited his match to her.  As a home-schooled sophomore with a 35-4 record, Joel is also a Christian who takes his faith seriously. So he could not in good conscience wrestle with a  girl due to the manner in which a wrestler must grapple with their opponent. If only we had more boys raised to respect the fairer sex as much as Joel has been.   His parents are homeschooling him. but he has been allowed to wrestle with the Lin-Mar of Marion Iowa.  So Cassy Herkelman of Cedar Falls was able to win her first match at the Iowa State High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2011.

Her opponent, Joel Northrup of Linn-Mar of Marion, declined to wrestle her.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan (Black, the tournament's other female entrant) and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times. As a matter of conscience and my faith, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most of the high school sports in Iowa."

His coach Doug Streicher did not speak with the media after the match. The other girl, Megan, lost her match in 52 seconds to the boy she wrestled.

What a great young man. God Bless his decision to honor a young lady. She doesn’t realize it yet...but this young man just honored her position as a cherished young lady.

Home schooled kids. One of the few bright spots left in American culture.

God bless this young man for being willing to stand on principle, even when it costs him something personally.

The media can go suck eggs.

I haven’t read all the ins and outs of this story, but enough to have an opinion.

I say “Hats off!!” to this young man.

A man does not manhandle a lady. And he manhandles a woman only if he is under extreme duress.

Just my take on things.

Good for him.

Cultural Marxism denies God’s design of male and female. Marxists state there is no difference...so that is why we have women in the military and invading boy’s sports teams, although there is biological fact and reasoning that prove there is a difference. It is why Marxism is a joke—it ignores Natural Law Theory.

Marxism wants to destroy the family relationships. By putting women in combat they are destroying the “protective” role of man, because men will be trained to “kill” women or “hit” and regard them as the “same” in the fox holes. It is conditioning AGAINST the nature of man.

Marxists want to destroy the maternal connection between children and mothers. Feminism was founded by a communist Friedan. To destroy the family.

Lenin invented daycares—to create attachment and bonding disorders so children will never be able to make long and lasting attachments like in marriage. They will also be crappy mothers who will have no attachment to their offspring and not meet the demanding needs of infants creating dysfunctional, state-dependent people.

All prisoners were abused children, most had no biological father, and those that had mothers never got the attention and contact they needed to be emotionally healthy human beings.

Pathology in monkeys is caused by removing an infant from its mother. Those monkeys removed grow up to be anti-social, unable to mate and reproduce, are extremely aggressive and will kill and practice all sorts of abnormal behavior such as homosexuality.

Marxists understand psychology and they are out to destroy our country—not make it more “equitable”. Marxism takes the beauty, mystery, excitement, respect, romance, etc., out of sex and relationships. It makes us into nothing but “trousered apes and reduces sex to a vulgar, animal act.

So, this idea of no difference between a girl and boy is NONSENSE and the schools need to end the Marxist cr*p. Girls and Boys need DIFFERENT rules because they are DIFFERENT in biology. What fools are these politicians who try to REDESIGN man and woman into their own (godless) image and DENY NATURAL LAW which is the basis of our legal system.

Please, wrestling isn't fondling.

He really won and in more ways than if he did wrestle her.

Class act! Now every parent will want him to date their daughter eventually.

Nope, it's groping...that makes it okay to do to a young lady. We bellow about it from the airlines, but think it's okay for teenage boys to wrestle girls. Get real.

My son wrestled a girl when he was a freshman (she was a Sr). She was actually very good, and he lost to her in an early round of a tournament. He held back, he was nervous and she was more experienced. He was also devastated.

Later in the year, he came up against her again in a dual meet, at her school. This time he pinned her fairly quickly, his award from the crowd.......... he was booed loudly and long.

I was the 152 pounder on my high school team in the mid-90s. I never was put in that situation, but I knew two guys on our team that were.

The first was our 125 lbs. guy, and he had to wrestle a girl who was pretty damn good, so good in fact that she ended up pinning him in the second round. She actually made it to our regional tournament later that year. He never lived that down, but the girl on the mat hardly looked like a girl. This one in particular was skinny but toned, wore a swimmer's cap over her hair and a really tight sports bra. He was stronger than she was, but her technique was simply better.

Another buddy of mine wrestled at 135 lbs. and was matched against a girl back when he was on JV, and I remember him saying as he walked onto the mat that "this should be interesting."

He hip tossed her really hard and pinned her in about 15 seconds. He didn't feel the least bit bad about it.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other really, but I can say that there are no gender norming procedures on the mat. If you can hold your own there, you belong there.

Anybody who says that a wrestler's technique would suffer because he'd be afraid to grab her in certain places has simply never been on the mat. It goes by so fast and it's so intense that if you're wrestling a girl and you find that she's a match for you, you better do what it takes to win or else you'll have a permanent emotional scar.

The only time I've ever been in a similar situation was when I was training BJJ a couple of years ago. Out of about 15 guys there were two girls, one of whom was a blue belt, and a pretty good one. We drilled to where everybody rotated partners every few minutes, and I rolled with this little Russian girl who actually got me in a front collar choke, which is where you use the jiu jitsu gi collar flaps to choke the neck. I started to black out a little bit so I just slammed her on the mat until she let go. It certainly wasn't polite, but she wasn't there to play tennis; she was there to learn jiu jitsu.

If this girl can compete I don't see what the problem is.

I don't know why this guy felt he had to forfeit with a state championship on the line. These aren't sexual moves, and if a girl can make it to the state championship then she worked hard to get there, and she's probably kicked the crap out of plenty of guys on her way too.

Lastly, if the kid is home schooled, then why is he wrestling on a high school team?

I’ve done Judo. Being one of those aforementioned 120 pound folks, I usually got matched up to spar with some of the ladies in the class.

Sparring is one thing, but a match? They have girls and guys split out in Judo for a reason. Sparring is all about training and control.

I have a real problem understanding why a girl would want to wrestle...or for that matter parents who would allow their daughter to do so.

My son wrestled so I do have some understanding of the sport and disagree that this contact made is not grouping or foundling or whatever word you want to call it. It IS a “contact” sport....where hands reach to all places for the holds. Why would a parent even think of putting their daughter in that type of contact sport!

I'm not a judo expert, but I took a couple of judo classes as electives at our BJJ school. All we did were throws, and I don't think judo involves striking.

Strikes are a different story, in that you're looking for a knockout or technical. I wouldn't engage in a match with a female if striking was involved, and strikes and grappling are two wholly different things in my book. Punching a girl in the face isn't the same as going for a submission, a pin, or trying to score points.

So he could not in good conscience wrestle with a girl due to the manner in which a wrestler must grapple with their opponent.

It's even more unnatural for boys to grapple with other boys.

It's Greek -- nasty history of that stuff.

I don't know why a girl would want wrestle either, but if she can get on the mat and beat guys, then I don't see the rationale for telling her she can't.

If a man and a woman grappling with each other to score points in a match has some sort of sexual connection, then one could make the argument that two men grappling with each other is somehow 'gay' (which my non-wrestling friends would occasionally raz me about).

This isn't a 'contact' sport in the same way football or boxing is.

The risk of injury due to the strength difference in men and women is much lower.

No, it doesn’t. It’s strictly grappling. Grab the neck of the GI, leg sweeps, etc. There’s a fair bit of groundwork, but most folks try to go for chokeholds rather than pins.

I’m a fan of that GI pinch. It’s useful for small folks against big folks.
