"Free trade" is not the solution to our problems. "Free trade" is the problem...
(vanity)

Posted on 02/13/2011 4:06:39 PM PST by Cringing Negativism Network

It is time to face up to the elephant in the living room, which for some reason conservative Americans are desperately determined to ignore.

"Free trade" is destroying America.

A generation ago, America was the world's preeminent power. We led the world in manufacturing. Technology. Space. Innovation. In every way, America was the best.

In a single generation, we have squandered that heritage, and now are deeply in debt to a communist nation which just one generation ago - rode only bicycles.

WTF will it take, to wake Americans (particularly conservative Americans, who should know better) up to the very real danger of stripping America of everything which made her great?

A generation ago, America was the world's preeminent power. We led the world in manufacturing. Technology. Space. Innovation. In every way, America was the best.

The rest of the world has finally caught up with us.
Did you think they were going to stay a century behind us forever.

We have been cutting a fat hog for a long time, but now it's over. I don't think it is the government,s fault or business's fault. I really think it all came about because backward countries would send their brightest students to the U.S. to be educated and learn about our ways and then they would return to their own countries and begin to provide goods and services at a better rate than we could provide them ourselves. Remember the trinkets and cheap junk we used to get from Japan and other Asians countries?

Soon they began to challenge us for markets in more and more areas. It's free markets and competition, it's what we preach and now they are using their natural advantages such as lower cost of labor to take it to us.

We have some disadvantages, but so do they. Bottom line is those that can, can and those who can't, can't.

...but that we are not taken advantage of by currency manipulations and resource dumping.

What is your solution for this?

A free market economy is never the problem. Government interference with a free market is always the problem (unless they are legitimately breaking up a monopoly).

You didn’t answer question 1.

Once you do you will see why Tariffs are a bad idea.

But you have to understand basic Economics first.

A generation ago, war had just destroyed the economic capacity of the world - Europe, Japan, China.Eventually the world caught up.

Eliminate Corporate taxes, regulations, EPA, let up produce energy, and watch thigs grow again.

We can compete if government gets out of the way.

Free Trade is only one of the problems.

But it's a big one.

I support a 50% tariff on all manufactured goods that originate in China (due to currency manipulation) and a $50/bbl tariff on all IMPORTED oil and refined products (national security issue).

Of course the energy tariff would have to be offset by more nukes and more drilling. And, some of that tariff money could be used to offset a guaranteed price for "cracked" diesel from coal...

If we have a war with China it could go Nuclear.. It doesn’t matter how many factories which country have. You can’t produce squat in radioactive crap. Also the reason why factories where building our military during WWII cause our Government gutted OUR MILITARY BEFORE WWII. That is why we have massive military spending..

Well, corporations DON’T pay taxes anyway. The end customer pays the taxes. And, the labor market would adjust itself as well. During the .com boom the companies were giving out free BMW leases as incentives to attract employees. Sure good chunk of them went bankrupt as they should. The market determines (and should). Not government through regulations, taxes and tariffs.

The government got us into this mess, and only the government can get us out of it. Don’t you see?

Funny how much mental convolutions it takes to equate dealing with a Communist slave state as having a free market economy.

A tariff, of about 10% should be instated immediately, accompanied by a reduction in the corp tax rate of 10%.

The anti-slavery, pro-tariffs Yankees that ran the country in the 19th century are now anti-tariff pro-slavery hypocrites of the 21st century. Free Traiters can GTH.

I told you what I propose.

I deliberately choose, to not get distracted by hypotheticals or theory. That sort of egg-head nonsense is how we got into this mess!! Economists and people quoting stuffy academics with their heads up their ... textbooks.

America first! Middle. And always. AMERICA. Why must everything be so complicated?

America first.

Everything else, is a distraction. I could use another couple of words.

Hitler had nerve gas galore, a weapon of mass destruction. Even when cornered and trapped in Berlin he refused to unleash it. Your argument is specious, nuclear weapons do not mean no war. Just the opposite. They will not be used as we will have no way to stand up conventionally..

Deep down you know there is no way an American can compete with a Chinese slave, labor cost wise. Do you honestly think that if, 30 years ago the corp rate was reduced to 0% and unions outlawed here, it would have made one iota of a difference in what has occurred, free trade wise? I don’t.

>>Everything else, is a distraction. I could use another couple of words.<<

IOW, you know nothing about even basic economics.

Like many, you have an uninformed opinion, based in total ignorance. Yet, you want people to adopt your stance.

Your position is like someone saying 1+1=3 and thus we should adopt ensure the sum of all triangles angles should be 198 degrees.

We have enough ignorance in the public. It does us no good to inculcate more. Especially in a Conservative forum where facts should be paramount.

You are correct. Both of you. Except maybe the comrade part, unless you mean I’m a comrade in the sense Jesus Christ is a comrade.

What I meant to suggest at the end of my post is to put a stop to the greed and corruption by putting criminals in prison for really long terms.

I didn’t mention the government, cause it goes without saying most of them should be behind bars.

What is the solution?

I vote the whole sh!+house goes up in flames and the cockroaches assume command.

Hardworking people and Freedom is what made America great. We have lost a significant amount of both.

The ruling class's definition of "free trade" is a 50,000 page treaty on exceptions to free trade and special privileges for special people.
True free trade is a zero-page document with no ruling-class parasites involved.

BIG Bump!
