It is time to face up to the elephant in the living room, which for some reason conservative Americans are desperately determined to ignore.
"Free trade" is destroying America.
A generation ago, America was the world's preeminent power. We led the world in manufacturing. Technology. Space. Innovation. In every way, America was the best.
In a single generation, we have squandered that heritage, and now are deeply in debt to a communist nation which just one generation ago - rode only bicycles.
WTF will it take, to wake Americans (particularly conservative Americans, who should know better) up to the very real danger of stripping America of everything which made her great?
Hey Drago — This thread separates the men from the boys. The ones who know you have to make things to survive on a legitimate level from those who think it doesn’t matter who owns factories on American soil.
>>I laud you for standing by economic principles in your assessing of the merits of the implied protectionism that some here have touted as the fix for our trade woe.<<
You might want to go back and look, I was waiting for someone who knows something to show up.
>>By the way, the answer to your first question is the difference in shifting the entire demand curve versus movement along the curve. Just throwing that in there so you know I didnt sleep through my Econ classes at college.<<
FINALLY!! That was all I asked, whether the OP (and others) knew that simple and fundamental concept.
You would think I was trying to trick people.
And maybe I was. You clearly went through Econ classes and stayed awake. I am sure you recall that was covered the very first week.
I hope you join me in my impatience for people who never went through Econ basics and then say “well, I took some econ classes” when you and I both know that isn’t possible.
To opine on subjects of which one does not know is the same as liberals (Of course, I am talking about the OP and others).
Thanks for grounding me and reminding me we have people here who DO know their stuff!
I only see a defensive posture...
A fortress America, America first for survival...
We drill our own oil, and kick the shit of of those that say we can't...We plant our own crops, and charge the Mideast 5 dollars for a slice of bread....
We develop new sources of energy and do it fast...I don't care if its wind, solar or whatever, and we should ALL support these efforts...
Our country is being fragmented, fueled by extreme of anger.....
We'd better get back to being a united country, or this is going to get *really* ugly for ALL Americans.
Free trade is not free.
Free trade is not the problem.
Government getting in the way of Free Trade is the problem.
Thanks for the post.
Free Trade has failed. People can quote all the economists who ever lived....but it does not make up for the fact that Free Trade does not work. Free Trade is the “Schieffen Plan” of economics....only its followers are not smart enough to see Free Trade has failed.
Here are 5 reasons Free Trade failed:
1. Karl Marx
2. Al Gore
3. Franklin Delano Roosevelt
4. John Maynard Keynes
5. Barack Hussein Obama
All these very liberal people support, and actively pushed, Free Trade.
These guys obviously are not the bastions of conservatism...or sound economic policy. But, all are Free Traders.
Free Trade does not work because most nations know, when push comes to shove, it will always be more beneficial to protect your industry, than to allow competition. Except for the two-digit IQ Free Trade supporters in this country....most around the world have figured this out
You think it’s “worked well for china”? Huh. I don’t think I can have an intelligent conversation with you then. If you think China is prosperous, then we’re just in different universes.
do you have some historical evidence of protectionism working? If not, I’d suggest you not talk about in ‘factual’ tones, but the “wish” voice protectionists always talk in. (doesn’t work in real life, never has, never will)
As for the existence of tariffs in general, they are, IMHO, a valid facet of Free Trade only when they are minimally implemented as a protection against unjust foreign trade, for example the existence of Tyrannical foreign labor standards which can be reasonably argued to unfairly penalize the American worker.
One of the stated intents of the Constitution (via its Preamble) is to establish justice. Therefore, it seems reasonable that the ideal of Free Trade should be practiced with that in mind, and should guide all three branches of our federal government.
My motto is --- "You want to live high off the hop you gotta produce high off the hog" Right now we have hundreds of million of people who think they are entitled to live real nice even though they are educated at a 3rd world level and produce at a 3rd world level
We have loads of domestic coal and natural gas that can help our energy picture. We need tariffs on foreign oil as well as tariffs on Chinese goods. Once you put tariffs on foreign oil there is more incentive for exploration here and prices go up a bit meaning people will have an incentive to buy CNG and electric powered vehicles for up to 50 mile hops.
Take the money raised via tariffs and use them to provide tax incentives to set up manufacturing on US soil....no foreigners need apply and that means green card holders too
Step three is get people out of cities who are welfare recipients and are raising future welfare recipients. Get them out on collective farms to grow fruits, vegetables, poultry and beef. Get all those druggies and crack addicts out hoeing cabbages and if they can't handle this then they get no food.... let them die. Unlikely to happen but would solve the problem of millions of unneeded workers and unneeded people in our cities
Step four is build up our grain/soybean agricultural sector and gear it up for exporting to a hungry world which we are already doing but do it more
Is China’s goal “martial”...I doubt it.
historical proof??
Yeah, how about all preceeding centuries of trade and the use of the term TRADE SECRETS?
Do you always make up things?
Who makes AMERICAN jet aircraft parts?
WHAT do Americans make and how did they make it?
WHOSE money did they use to develop it?
HOW can we COMPETE against governments using GOVERNMENT money to cover all losses and gains when WE have to use our own money to produce and cover losses??
Are you that dense?
“Dust is not a chemical.”
EPA says dust is hazardous and must be controlled. American farmers must address it, why should foreign growers who want to sell their products in the US be given a free pass?
sounds great, but tell me, who does the actual production work and what province in China is it in?
Get real. You have no idea what is or isn’t or who or who does not make a part, part of a part of anything you buy.
You want to know what would happen? Here’s an idea, raise prices on everything imported 30 percent. See what happens. According to you, we’ll prosper. Matter of fact, double prices, go 100 percent and we’ll prosper even more, faster.
Most of what he does is for smaller parts and production location depends on the part.
My point of posting that was to refute the statement that “mom and pop” shops who support large companies no longer exist.
While largely true most have a very difficult time competing with foreign countries and their lower cost structures.
“You think its worked well for china? Huh. I dont think I can have an intelligent conversation with you then. If you think China is prosperous, then were just in different universes.”
-
Clearly true.
I honestly cannot think of a single measure by which China is not doing better than we are.
Trade balance. Education. Employment. Manufacturing. Growth. Savings. Innovation. Scientific advancement. Space. Military spending.
Let’s say that again: Military spending.
We. America. Are massively in debt to COMMUNIST CHINA.
Think about that!!!
You really don’t want to, do you? Doesn’t change the fact it’s true.
We are so very completely, doing exactly everything wrong right now. We are literally destroying our own nation.
For what?
I ask again.
FOR WHAT??
