One hundred years after American explorer Hiram Bingham took tens of thousands of artefacts from the Incan city of Machu Picchu back to his alma mater, Yale University is sending them home.

"No cultural treasures I am aware are discarded by those people whose ancestors created them."

In that case you ought to expand your awareness. Machu Pichu was for the most part, allowed to fall into complete disrepair at the mercy of the elements. The local inhabitants valued it only for the occasional stone they pilfered from it to spare them the bother of quarrying one. Had it not been for Bingham, and his recognition of its importance, it would have continued to deteriorate and be reclaimed by the landscape.

I suppose your perfectly happy how the descendants of Afghan Buddhists preserved the Bamiyan Buddhas. You're going to love what the Muslim Brotherhood does to the Sphinx!

This should serve as another legal precedent

Was this decided in a court of law? If so, who is the authority over two sovereign nations?

When will Israel get the Temple mound back?

I hear crickets chirping at Yale...

She implies that Lord Elgin was English when actually he was Scottish. Not that it makes much difference since the marbles ended up in London.

The name of the man who fired the shot which touched off the explosion is on record--the first time I was on the Acropolis I overheard a tour guide going into detail about it (I think he was from one of the German states).

Not only did the Venetians cause the destruction of one of the most beautiful buildings ever built, but they didn't even hold on to Athens for very long after capturing it.

There is a full-size replica of the Parthenon in Nashville, but somehow it just isn't the same. Inside they have a set of casts of the Parthenon marbles.

Some lawyer will find the descendants of the Jebusites and file a lawsuit claiming that David captured the city in an unjustified war of aggression (not sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council).

Whatever. Why can't you just come to America and be an American, rather than bring all your ethnic prejudices with you.

Some people come here and self-identify as Americans. Why can't you?

The artifacts were not moral or Christian, so EPIC FAIL on that sock puppet.

Also you have still failed to prove any ownership claim, other than it came out of the ground someplace. By that reasoning, anything I dig up goes to Indians.

Also throwing around the Leninist label is as effective as calling someone a Nazi, it is a sure sign you have lost your argument. But, you already knew that...

There should never be a reward for taking another property based on a flimsy paternalistic notion that the owner is not fit to hold his property.

I concur. Let's do away with 'emminent domain' in all its forms.

My wife is Peruvian. She just said that the museum there filled with golden artifacts are now just gold plated copies....thanks to corruption. Her first words when I read the first few lines were, "Oh no !!"

Egyptian Museum theft worse than first reported, archaeologist says - NY Times http://nyti.ms/gSmHOE

This is the same Museum who recently asked Germany to return the bust of Nefertiti, just before the Egyptian riots began.

I cannot accept your apology, no matter how abject.

Your "bad" has misled thousands of young history students, who must now take time away from their Maya Angelou poetry seminars to straighten out this horrid misconception which blamed blowing up the Parthenon on Muslims, many of whom may not have been white... a blow to their self-esteem.

I have notified the moderator to put a frieze on your Parthenon-posts covering this period until all impediments are removed ... and not to the bloody British Museum!

BTW, The Chief of the Venetian Artillery was so overcome with remorse, that he developed a drinking problem. He engaged in an drinking contest with an Irishman from another post, during which he lost his eyesight. This allowed the Irishman to proclaim himself not only the clear winner, but to make the claim that he had drunk a Venetian Blind.

Joe, don't sweat it. During the confusion, we should be able to get the Sphinx back to New Haven. The museum will just have to make room. Just to be politically correct, they can say, "It's on loan."

I an unaware of gold plated objects in the museum. That could be just a rumour and she has bought into it.

She - and you - are missing the point. Stolen property should be returned to the rightful owners. Anything else is anathema to the tenets of property rights and ownership.

You have filled me with an unbearable guilt.
I have a couple of double handfuls of indian arrowheads and pottery shards that I picked up when I was a lad over the span of several years from various freshly plowed fields and road side ditches all over the state.
Who is it that I should “give them back” to?
Perhaps I should I just toss them into the woods somewhere?
Can you offer me any advice to ease my conscience?
