Well it has been a long road for us Viking fans and ever since I watched them lose Super Bowl XII to the Oakland Raiders on Jan 9, 1977, I and many Viking fans have been waiting for them to return to the big game. In the mean time we have had to suffer through numerous close calls that has had them at the very brink of returning, just to fall short. Then came the Favre situation where we were forced to endure watching the man we grew to hate, take our team to the brink of the Super Bowl again, just to choke in the NFC championship. Again us Viking had to endure watching another team we should have beat take home our trophy.
Well, here we are, the day before the Super Bowl and us Viking fans are destined to watch two teams we have good reason to dislike, some if us just hate them both. Well, growing up Duluth Minnesota in the 60's meant that the Packers ruled the roost for most of my childhood. Then a new team came along and gave me a reason to hold my head up in pride. The Norseman we call the Vikings, would become the dominant team of the black and blue division of the NFC.
Much of what I am sharing with you will be posted in an article I am writing for my site with the ER, but this one is targeted especially for my Freeper friends. As many of you know, I write a blog for the ER, and it is currently the number one blog in Chico and Oroville California.
As for the reason I am posting a link to a poll from a newspaper that most around the country could care less about, well it's because Aaron Rodgers is a homeboy from Chico. He went to Pleasant valley High School, plus Butte College which is but 20 miles from Chico. Aaron Rodgers, the local boy who could not even get a look by any big colleges for a scholarship. He persevered though by going to Butte a local community college and becoming a standout who was eventually noticed by the Cal bears of Berkley. Berkley is the town Chico is often times compared to.
Interestingly his High School sport teams mascot is a Viking. You would think I would fit right in and join the rooting of their sports team, and for many years after i moved here in 1988 I have. Then Aaron was drafted by the Green Bay Packers. I knew he was good, and I was angry at the 49ers for not drafting him. Reality is it was the best thing that happened for him, because the 49ers had a lot of problems, and Aaron was able to study behind Favre.
So here I am living in Chico California, a die hard Minnesota Viking fan who despises the Green Bay Packers. Oh I have tried to step away from football a few times, but trying to quit the NFL is more difficult than quitting heroin. So I still watch football, but now I watch it in Green Bay California. No getting away from the team that half my friends rooted for when I was a child. A team whom I am constantly reminded has won 3 Superbowls, while the Viking have none.
Everywhere I go I see Packer fans wearing those god awful green jersey with that lame logo, a "G". Ask them and they don't even know what the G stands for, but it matters not because Rodgers is the new Bart Star who is going to put a steak in the hated legend that was Bret Favre. Even at church I cannot get away from it, because Aaron Rogers will be mentioned in a sermon as he was last week when the senior Pastor mentioned it in a message about perseverance and keeping the faith. Well, I am asking my fellow Freepers a favor today. Please go to the poll which is on the front page of my hometown newspaper that I have linked to and vote that the Steelers will win. It matters not that you may want Green Bay to win. I just want someway to show my displeasure with all the Green Bay talk I am being forced to endure. Two years of Favre at the helm of the Vikings, and now this. There is just so much a man can stand, and I am drawing the line today. Imagine if thousands of voters chose Steelers over the home boys team the packers in his home town? You will make this old man smile as they wonder why no one wants Green bay to win.
Then if you want, stop by my blog, GATE,and give me a hit. I know, I am shamelessly pimping my blog but considering the humiliation I must endure in Green Bay California, it's the least you could do for a fellow Freeper from Duluth who finds himself living amongst the enemy.
P.S. I also loath the Vikings :o)
Go Packers!
Although I hate the Steelers (except for Troy) I voted for them just for you. :)
Some FReepers suffer from an amazingly malignant form of Roethlisberger Derangement Syndrome. Losers hate winners. I’ll enjoy the wailing and gnashing of teeth when it’s over.
Poll needs freepin’ for OneVike, who’s rooting for the Steelers.
Green Bay Packers.

Hey, if I have to put up with the lousy Wisconsin weather, at least going to the Superbowl breaks up the winter a bit.
Brett Farve STILL SUCKS!!!
A-Fricking men.
As a JETS fan it’s my duty to cheer for the NFC.
I have never seen anything that charged Big Ben as a rapist in any manner. Admitted he got drunk and supposedly nailed some dumb college broad in a bathroom but no charges were ever brought against him. Nothing here, move on.
Thanks for the ping!
Obviously touched a nerve.
Roethlisberger’s into sex with the insensible it seems, eh?
Yeah, it goes w/ the territory.
I can understand why alot of people hate the Steelers, and by extension Pittsburgh. We've had greater success than most other cities sports-wise. So envy is natural.
Its fun being the guys it the black hats.
It ain't sweetness and light baby, it's m*th&*f^&*in' Pittsburgh football and you better strap up!
Mean ole' James Harrison is comin' to get you!!!!
Bwaahaaahaa.
You got that right.
I’ll overlook the fact that you’re a Jets fan. We’re past that now. :)
PS...sorry that you had to suffer through cleaning up our left overs (Farve).
Can’t blame me for being bitter. 24-0, gah!
It was quite a season. Although it’s a long time until the next game, we do have the draft to look forward to.
True. I was so hoping that LT would collect his ring. The Chargers were idiots to let him go. Had another 1300 yard season to boot, and should pass Barry Sanders for Yards from Scrimmage.
He’s the best RB since Faulk.
Faulk is amazing. I fear that his career may be over. He’s a nice guy, too.
I believe he has enough to give it another kick at the can. We shall see.
Second best pass catching RB ever. He’s not too far behind Curtis Martin for 4th all time rushing yards either. That would leave only the big four, Sweetness, Emmitt, and Barry.
Ugh....go away. You are clearly a troll. Disgusting mutant. Go Steelers. Six times and going. You are bitter and ancient.....time to call it a day? Yes.
