Sons of Guns showcases one of America's most skilled and creative gun works, Red Jacket Firearms, and its founder, Will Hayden. While pursuing its bread-and-butter work with customizing and improving AK-47's, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana team delves into the world of historic and classic weapons. See how this amazing group of eclectic gunsmiths build one-of-a-kind custom firearms and other weapons every Wednesday at 9 p.m. E/P starting January 26.
I filled in my fiberglass stock where it was cut for the M14 select fire switch, I should have bought the fake selector switch and installed it, make my M1A look like an M14, it would have been nice to have the full auto option but I would never need it, not in .308 anyway.
Hehe... My uncle told me that in Vietnam he tried out for SAW man and couldn’t control the M14 on full auto. it went
straight up in the air on him. So he laid prone and emptied another magazine. It drove him back about a foot in the dirt.
He quit trying. He was only about 140 lbs soakin wet.
I had an SKS that I decided one day to shoot a few round through, I had bought it and never stripped it down to clean the free floating firing pin, well it was full of enough crud that it went nearly full auto on me, every time I pulled the trigger I would get doubles or triples.
Great show it has its good and bad points however.
Good brings guns more out of the shadows, making them less of a Taboo subject
Good Informs people about guns and gets them interested in the subject of personal defense.
Bad The usual (most likely Lawyers mandated) do not try this at home BS.
What arent we supposed to try at home? Protecting ourselves? Exercising our God given right of self-defense?
Bad Not sure if the producers of the show want to cast gun owners in a bad light or not.
In one of the episodes, Will talks with some potential handgun buyers and warns them that gunfights arent like the moves, etc.
Yeah, NSS. But whats the alternative to defending yourself?
He may have moved his shop but it was in downtown Ashford when I knew him.
Now that I think about it, he was only part time. I think his wife ran the shop during the week as he worked at the nuclear power plant.
Probably not the same smithie then. Perhaps it was his son whom I met in the early nineties. My son took me from Montgomery, North to a gunsmith who was making suppressors for weapons. The suppressor I tested was a ‘grease packed suppressor’.
This week a suspected murderer was found in the Choctawhatchee River bottoms after a manhunt. He was armed with a .22 rifle.
He was killed but tragically also killed a K-9 officer and wounded another.
No, I would not use a .22LR if I knew I was going to be in a gunfight but time and again it has shown itself to be a real killer. It has several real advantages including accuracy, lack or recoil, lack of noise etc.
I watched the clips Discovery has up on Youtube. She’s OK. The hotness factor goes up several points when she’s firing a Ma Deuce, now I’ll grant you that.
I loved the clip where they rebuilt the flamethrower for the 89-year-old MOH recipient.
“That’s seventy pounds, Mr. Williams.”
“I don’t care if it’s 70 pounds, I WANT TO WORK IT!”
And then he goes out and has a grand old time with it. Awesome.

Great Show (IMHO)
With our snowfall here in Mid-Missouri, I’ve had fantisies about using
a good old WWII era flame thrower to rid our driveway of a load of snow.
I thought it was great irony when “Sons of Guns” showed the 89-year old
Marine (Congressional Medal of Honor) getting to shoot the flame thrower
renovated by Red Jacket.
I just said to myself, if I didn’t have nosey neighbors “I need to get
me one of those for the winter-time!!!”.
Probably would emit the same or less green-house gases as some
gas-powered snow blower!!!
I lost interest after the 4th episode or so.
Possibly the fact that I am a fabricator, a gunsmith, a reloader and a firearms collector may have swayed my view.
They should have stayed more to precision and documentary style instead of false effect propaganda. Yes that is exactly how they come off to me, showing how to destroy, how to be careless, too much false drama for effect.
IT SUCKS
Besides they pissed me off by cutting off the Mythbusters episodes.
