Two cocktail cuties at The Standard say they got canned for not fitting the mold of "willowy, svelte and statuesque runway models" at the trendy hotel's Boom Boom Room.
Aspiring actresses Faye Rex and Stephanie Jaggers are suing the Meatpacking District hotel, claiming management sees fit to employ only women with runway model looks at its sexy playpen above the High Line.
"There's definitely a type at the Boom Boom Room - and that type is beautiful, tall and skinny," said Richard Roth, a lawyer for the women. "Compare that to the men."
Rex and Jaggers lost their jobs as cocktail waitresses last summer soon after the former Boom Boom Room reopened as the Top of the Standard, where beauties frolic in a hot tub planted in the middle of the 18th-floor hotspot.
The ax fell, according to the suit, soon after both women received evaluations saying their performances had been "not up to par" or "less than par" - a big departure from the "positive feedback" the "stellar employees" had previously received.
"They're beautiful women, but they're not tall and that, apparently, is a big crime," Roth said. "They were excellent employees who were terminated for one reason - their body type."
A hotel spokeswoman declined comment.
Rex, a 2009 NYU graduate who previously had a full scholarship to Rider University's theater program, lists herself as 5-foot-4 and 125 pounds on her resume. Jaggers' height is in the same neighborhood, according to her lawyer.
"It's not a question of looks," Roth said. "They want statuesque runway models, and they're treating women differently than they're treating men."
The hotel previously made headlines for encouraging its guests to showcase their X-rated romps in open windows above the High Line.
Pong.
Hey! The Boom Boom Room has certain standard!
High standards.
If being ugly was the reason, then how did they get hired in the first place?
Useless thread.
Useless thread.
They look pretty hot to me.
Listen honey, I don't think you will find this guy on the runway.
At least without pictures it is.
(I see your point, but we do need to keep track of how stupid the opposition is getting and I guarantee these girls voted for Obama)
Well...the Boom Boom Room is shallow.....but they can hire who they want.
If looks are in the job description they don’t have a case.
I see nothing wrong with a company hiring who they want based on looks. Gets tricky when you let existing employees go, though, since they got hired probably based on one set of looks.
People get hired based on education, talent, skill, depends on the job. Some jobs call for certain looks, like a spokesmodel at a trade show.
Response: Something that our society desperately needs.
Management needs to realize that men don’t all like the same type of look. Some prefer curvier women, some prefer thinner women, some prefer taller... or shorter... or whatever. To only provide one “look” in their female employees is a bad business decision.
The women pictured in the article aren’t super gorgeous, but they’re definitely attractive (imho).
I'm in no way an authority in this are, or even casually knowledgeable, but it is an interesting case. If club owners can't pick their decorative dancers based on physical appearance, then why couldn't a fat, old woman sue to have access to the runway during NY city's fashion week?
This seems a very slippery slope, like so many things today.
That’s the thing: they’re not ugly. Apparently, they weren’t tall enough to work in the revamped lounge.
I agree. People make judgements based on other people’s looks all the time.
“... and they’re treating women differently than they’re treating men.”
Now where in the heck did she get an idea like that?
Management saw them when they hired them. If the women were not receptive to tolerating boorish behavior by the boss(es) (pats on the bottom, suggestive behavior), it could be behind the dismissals (with later denial by management of its inappropriate behavior, should that be addressed). Sometimes these issues are much more complicated than they appear.
Maybe these two don't like hot tubs, or look good when wet.
