LONDON (AP) - Composer John Barry, who won five Oscars for his film work but was best known for his contributions to a dozen James Bond movies, has died. He was 77.
Barry died in New York on Sunday, his family said.
The English-born composer won two Oscars, for the score and the song, for "Born Free" in 1966, and he earned single statuettes for "The Lion in Winter" (1968), "Out of Africa" (1985) and "Dances with Wolves" (1990).

John Barry wrote music for James Bond films and High Road to China. His music was wonderful.

I don’t think that I’ve ever heard anything by him that wasn’t good.

I watched Born Free with my small kids the other night, and was amazed at how good the score was, and in particular the use of timpani and percussion. I seemed reminiscent of Goldfinger to me, and lo and behold I read here, it was John Barry. Wonderful. It is remarkable how a good score can double one’s enjoyment of the film. Rest in peace.

The best for sure. He will be missed. He composed real music - great music.

Ah, man, and to me, 77 isn’t really all that old nowadays.

Barry also wrote the musical score for the 1980 fantasy/time travel/ love story movie, “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymore. He won a Golden Globe award for this score. Beautiful music.

I agree. In this day and age 77 isn’t old.

Oh, no. :-( One of my favorite composers. James Bond wouldn’t be James Bond without John Barry.
RIP.

John Barry also composed the musical score on one of my all-time favorites, Field of Dreams. May he rest in peace.

The theme from Born Free has always been one of my favorites. I still get teary-eyed when I hear it.
