Winter in Zion National Park

Winter in Zion National Parklink

Winters in Zion National Park are mild, allowing hikers to experience many of Zion's trails in the winter. Some of the paths that get little sun might be icy, so check with the Zion Canyon Visitor Center before heading out. Use common sense and turn back if trail conditions are unsafe. Crampons are used by many who like to hike in the winter.

Winter Photography - Swirls of rock meander with pockets of brilliant white along Zion's main highway, the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway (SR-9). Swelling storms fill blue skies with puffs of gray clouds, providing an ideal backdrop for dramatic winter photography. Along SR-9,trees hold their leaves year-round allowing for wonderful photo opportunities. The east side of Zion National Park is a winter photographer's dream. In Zion Canyon, along the Virgin River, leaves fall padding the ground and providing a winterscape to capture on film. The river is usually higher in the winter and there are waterfalls and mist that exist at no other time of the year. The winter photographer can capture a time in Zion when it is at its most beautiful and few are around to see it.

Many people think the closing of the park is still in effect. The park reopened on December 24 following the wash out earlier in the month.

The park is open now!

One nice thing about Zion is that the park is relatively cool even when it’s 100 in St. George.

Antelope Canyon is near Lake Powell. Price,AZ.
I love Zion Nat’l. I haven’t been back since it’s been “developed.” ....in the spring, honeysuckle blooming and watered by clear, cold water seeps, in the shade.

That's what I thought. And yes we have been there. That entire region is spectacular. Here is an image taken at Lee's Ferry in October and a painting done in that region by G. Russell Case on the same trip. Another piece was made in the area by Ray Roberts.

When you come out on the east side of Zion the elevation rises to 5600 ft. very quickly. Our temperatures are always fifteen degrees cooler here. Nigh time in Zion is spectacular; especially under full moon.

Antelope Canyon...I’m an old lady, and so are my two best friends. We took our little cheapie cameras to the canyon and came home with the most spectacular pictures!
We were talking, this morning, about Zion, and what it was like to wander there 35 years ago....
The changing light on those mesa’s, especially after an early evening rainstorm, always staggers my heart.
My husband’s been working in Bagdad, AZ for about 6 years. The Sonoran desert will drive you crazy with beauty.
“And God separated the light from the darkness.”
The heavens truly declared the glory of God.

That looks like where I've taken a dip in the scorching heat before. My beagle and I were there once when it was 107°, and that was measured at Kanab!
