God I love my Hummer and my Gulfstream!
I had to read quite a few posts to find any moonbattery (but I did find some). Most of them were common sense and reasonable (i.e. I like my car, so I’m going to pay the $5, etc). There were a couple advocating a decent mass transit system, which should be a goal of every city. There was an entire thread on how stupid we are for sending our dollars to countries that hate us to purchase oil when we have it right here and won’t use it.
Most people would drive a lot less, and then the vultures would have to search elsewhere for more revenue. Probably push hard for the mileage tax, which would force people to drive even less. So, they’d have to jack up license and registration taxes. And on, and on.....
I would go down the road a little ways until I came across a 2006 (or so) Ford Excursion alongside the road, "For Sale", and buy it for around $3K. I'd use it for camping/fishing/hunting/snow-plowing.
If I woke up next to $5 gas I’d get dressed and slip out quietly.
I would be upset, carpool more often, and continue with life.
I just traded my 1994 GMC 1500 plus a little cash for a 1995 Chevy 3500 dually (454 w/Banks Powerpack ram air and Elelbrock multiport EFI) today. That big block feels like a rocket engine after the 350 - also paid $3.37 per gallon filling her up in Renton, Washington. Five bucks a gallon? If it gets some of these idiots off the road, fine.
I’d be waking up to an Obama Press briefing with him smiling and saying “Great news, we’re 5/8th of the there on the gas price I want!”
Let’s see, quick math...that’s going to cost me about $150 a month more than we pay now.
No change for me. I can handle it. I’ll cuss a little.
My kids would have to quit music lessons. So no driving them there. my 17 year old would ride the bus. my husband would stop snowplowing ANYBODY but us. straight to work and straight back. Go to town only once and get everything done at the same time...kind of like little house on the prairie days.

Yea, if gas goes to 5 dollars it’s obviously because Bush ordered Obama to do so.
Well, it wouldn’t hurt us initially. I could easily bike (or even walk) to work from where I live and my wife is stay at home mom..so no commuting issues.
However, the increase in food prices and energy would make an impact. Further, the higher gas prices would absorb a good percentage of discretionary income that our customers use to buy the luxuries sold where I work. Less sales will put the squeeze on our budget, and would result in layoffs. I would either end up the grimm reaper, a do the laying off, or a victim of the reaper. Ya never know.
Either way, $5.00 gas will kill the economy in short order.
At $5 per gallon I guess I would have to pick up a Tesla Motors Model S for around town driving (300 miles between charges).
Thanks grey_whiskers. I’d drive less. No doubt about it. For a while I’d got my driving down to a tank every three weeks. During the summer it started to creep up to weekly, and is currently in the area of two weeks. With the Alaska pipeline flowing again prices will come down some, but I think I’ll get back to my three weeks.

Anyone seen more recent stats?
When last this inflation barrage happened three winters ago, I switched to bicycle commuting, found less expensive grocery stores, lowered indoor temperature during winter, and later moved closer to work. I now drive the car only rarely. These accommodations help me keep spending under control. I continue to seek new mechanisms to trim spending, although I may be called to undertake a more ascetic lifestyle.
It would really be the fault of whoever did not get any oil/revenues from Iraq.
If gas was about $5 a gallon in the US I’m guessing it would be up around the $2.50-$2.75 a litre mark in NZ (it’s already at $2 a litre now)
I have two sources of income- one of them allows me to earn good money from home, and I only have to walk 5 minutes down the road to another part time job, which I basically work for petrol and food money.
Therefore as I don’t have to commute to earn money I wouldn’t be too badly affected. However, you do have to feel sorry (well perhaps not so much sorry as a kind of ‘haha told you so’ feeling) for all those people who moved out of convenient houses in town and into huge artificially created suburbs about 30-40 minutes drive away, just to have a massive house that still doesn’t have a big garden for growing food etc.
At that price I’d get back on the 250cc motorbike for all traveling that I need to do by myself- fewer nutters on the road in their done up Jap racer cars means less chance of being squashed.
When petrol prices were at their record 2.5 years ago most families sold their bigger v6 and v8 sedans and trucks, as well as turbo sports sedans and unnecessary cars, and bought crummy little eco boxes. The price of these bigger cars plummeted and you could get them for nicks- it was worked out that the average family would actually save money by buying a v8 and driving it carefully.
Does anyone else think the current price rises are a bubble, and that it could all come crashing down again?
