Chinese stealth fighter makes first test flight

BEIJING – China's prototype stealth fighter made its first-known test flight Tuesday, marking dramatic progress in the country's efforts to develop cutting-edge military technologies.

The plane dubbed the J-20 flew for about 15 minutes over an airfield in the southwestern city of Chengdu where it was spotted carrying out runway tests last week, Kanwa Asian Defense magazine editor Andrei Chang said.

Photos of the plane in flight and on the ground surrounded by men in civilian clothes and army overcoats were also posted on unofficial Chinese military websites. A J-10 fighter — China's last homegrown jet — flew behind it as a chase plane.

The test flight comes on the second day of a visit to China by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and the normally secretive military made no attempt to hide it or remove photos and reports about the J-20 from the Internet.

The timing and hands-off approach is apparently intended to send the message that Beijing is responding to calls from the U.S. and others to be more transparent about its defense modernization and future intentions.

Hey Eagle, our newest Chinese troll (Allthatucantleavebehind: joined Dec 31, 2010) had this to say about the J-20 vs Raptor on another thread:

Considering the fact the convential airframe F-22 is not very good at air-combat comparing with the ground-breaking unique airframe of J-20 (lifting-body co-plane canards blending with leading edges), when a F-22 is facing a J-20, the result may not much different than trying to pitting a SU-27 against a J-10.

Lol, it seems that you are still quite bitter about the obvious facts I mentioned about PAK-FA and Su-27, anyway, this is a very happy time for me so I dont want to waste anymore of my time on little issues like how J-20 will pwn PAK-FA etc.

So you can feel free to go ahead to brag how advanced the Su-27 nicknamed PAK-FA is and will be, I wont bother you here, OK? hehehe.

:)

He was also comparing the Rafale to the J-10. A little on the funny side, but in the same vein a little interesting to see whether such thoughts transcend ChiCom fanboy forums and stem-from/seep-into real circles of power in government. If enough idiots think the J-20 is better than the Raptor, that can lead to those idiots making other idiots do something stupid like make a move against Taiwan. Which would lead to dead idiots.

Canards? Yuck! Probably needs them to fly slow enough to land.

Don’t the canards increase RCS and make the plane more vulnerable to BVS attack? I don’t think the Raptor is really supposed to engage in gun battles with enemy planes.

My dear Allthatucantleavebehind. You did not provide any facts, and we were not even discussing the PakFa. What was happening on that thread is me dismissing your so called ‘technique information’ (whatever that is) on the J-10 being like the Rafale, and on the J-10/J-20/JF-17 being original. You are also not bothering me here ...the most you are is some passing albeit interesting anthropological experiment into the atrophied cognitive abilities of typical Chinese fanboys. In order to bother me you have to have a level of intellect capable of exuding sufficient brain-power to actually elicit a response greater than that of a roach’s ganglions. The fact that, in your mind, you can compare the J-10 with the Rafale, or a J-20 that has not even reached the stage where it can even withdraw its wheels to in-production F-22s, clearly prove to all and sundry that you are either some Taiwanese or Indian pretending to be Chinese in order to make people from China seem stupid, or you are in fact a Chinese troll who just happens to have some impeded ability to actually comprehend when he/she/it should …just …simply …yield.

I have provided many facts, ranged from official new sources to academic research, you just be very happy to ignore any facts against your PAK-FA invincible joke, so just relax.

This is a happy time for me, so stop this meaningless discussion since I bet in the end we all know J-20 is far far ahead over anything Russia has, so there is no point to discuss.

Everyone is forgeting that when we built one we built a radar tht could detect it, if possibile. This forced the USSR to redisgn their radars and spend a lot of maybe scrace funds.

Amazing. I never even mentioned PakFa yet you seem obsessed with it. Your attempts to move the discussion from the ludicrous statements you made about the J-10 being equivalent to the Rafale, and the J-20 being better than the F-22 Raptor makes me wonder if you are able to say you were foolish for saying that. So, do you now agree you were being dumb saying the Rafale=J-10 and J-20>Raptor? Do you now agree you were being asinine? (Oh, that means foolish)

Oh, I do know you are happy about the J-20. That is ok ...after all, even pigs are happy to wallow in liquified sh!t. You are allowed.

Hmmm - China responds to its future underlings’ calls for anything since when?
Probably a psy-ops article.
Recently there was the mock up of a missile killing one of our ships, too.
Wonder if the Chicoms believe these systems can deliver (yet), or just want us to think they can.

Notice the angles of the Full Flying Rudders. Opposite what it would be in Pitch for a Nose Up Attitude, my guess is they are using them as drag brakes on landing to reduce lift like hitting both Rudder Pedals on a Rutan Vari-Eze / Long Eze as they used their tip rudders as drag brakes for approact control.
