A Turning Point in the Discourse, but in Which Direction?

WASHINGTON — Within minutes of the first reports Saturday that Representative Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, and a score of people with her had been shot in Tucson, pages began disappearing from the Web. One was Sarah Palin’s infamous “cross hairs” map from last year, which showed a series of contested Congressional districts, including Ms. Giffords’s, with gun targets trained on them.

Another was from Daily Kos, the liberal blog, where one of the congresswoman’s apparently liberal constituents declared her “dead to me” after Ms. Giffords voted against Nancy Pelosi in House leadership elections last week.

Odds are pretty good that neither of these — nor any other isolated bit of imagery — had much to do with the shooting in Tucson. But scrubbing them from the Internet couldn’t erase all evidence of the rhetorical recklessness that permeates our political moment. The question is whether Saturday’s shooting marks the logical end point of such a moment — or rather the beginning of a terrifying new one.

The left has gone as far as blaming Speaker Bohner (SP?), and George W. Bush (and his wars) for the shooter’s actions.

I think that violence, in general, has increased since Barack Obama became President.

He has told his followers “if they bring a knife, WE BRING A GUN”. He clearly was inciting violence.

He also told them to GET IN THEIR FACES... clearly, again, inciting violence.

Until our President stops inciting violence, we can expect it to increase.

The Left immediately postulated that this was the work of the Tea Party. That having failed, they’ve become more desperate.

Sarah used surveyor symbols, not gun sights.

Yeah, I can't wait until his administration is OVER, that he is gone from office -- can you imagine ANYONE else running for high political office talking in Gangsta Chatter about 'Gittin' IN their face!' -- much less, bring a gun -- yeah, that'll inspire the pacifists, hey???

I stopped answering our doorbell, because within a day or so after the GO ARGUE IN THEIR FACE marching orders from Barry we had BHO-campaigners at our door at dinnertime, people who really thought they were gonna "chat us up."

Does Sarah Palin have a web site? I’m not aware that she does. WHO pulled the crosshairs image? The implication is that it was Sarah Palin, but I’m guessing it was pulled from some obscure site by a fan. Whoever pulled it, if it indeed was pulled, made a mistake. There’s nothing wrong with Palin, or anyone else, speaking of targeting a politician for the purpose of voting him or her out of office.

I’m not sure where it first appeared; maybe when they refer to “her website,” they mean her facebook page, or maybe a sarah PAC??

Giffords is a moderate Blue Dog Democrat and is widely liked on both sides of the aisle. One interesting sidelight: she read the First Amendment during the House’s reading of the Constitution on Thursday, and was very excited about it: “I just read the First Amendment!” Representative Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, said gleefully as she exited the floor. “I wanted to be here, I think it’s important,” Ms. Giffords said. “Reflecting on the Constitution in a bipartisan way is a good way to start the year.” Facebook users can watch a video of it here. And Aaron Worthing found this picture of Giffords with Speaker of the House John Boehner at her swearing in: http://patterico.com/

PS: Republicans at Congress are already on retreat!

Yes, they are.

They (Dems) play chess, we play checkers.

Having the new House out of session (and out of the news) for the next ten days was the STUPIDEST...POSSIBLE...MOVE that I could even imagine - No! Wait! It's SO stupid, I could not have imagined it.

What it means is ten days of unrelenting, vicious attacks against Sarah Palin, against guns, against straights (I'm sure the shooter was driven crazy by GOP opposition to DADT repeal), against the military (the shooter was so HURT by their rejection), and on, and on.

Every news broadcast will open with Palin shooting a caribou which will morph into Gabrielle Giffords - you can bet on it.

And the House GOP will be hiding their faces.

Amazing. Just amazing.

"A Turning Point in the Discourse, but in Which Direction?"

Prediction: Loughner will be deemed "Mentally Unstable"....

Democrats and RINOs will present to Congress Legislation that prohibits "Mentally Unstable" citizens from owning or handling firearms.

In the bill will be a clause that All people who wish to own weapons must undergo a "competency test"...

There will be much fighting about those who already own weapons whether they must take the test to continue to own the weapons they already have.

My deepest condolences for the dead and wounded in this senseless act of ignorance. Violence against citizens cannot be condoned under any circumstance.

But Congress has a 13% popularity rating. It is obvious they have, in their arrogant and unethical behavior, pissed off an entire nation. They are naive to believe their repulsive actions could not generate an angry response from the fringe that has no more patience. The fringe is as much left wing revolutionary as it is right wing unimpaired liberty.

As Thomas Jefferson Said “The tree of liberty must be occasionally refreshed with the blood of tyrants and patriots.” Many of the actions our government is taking are visibly tyrannical.

But the result of the threat of people revolting will only make government less accessible by the people. And more tyranny to control the angry citizenry.

Link to any discussion about a “scraping operation”?

I know of two threads discussing site performance. I don’t think either of them discussed the above.

Surveyor marks not cross-hairs... surveyor marks... mark points on a map. Sarah Palin’s site has pictures to prove the difference. Uneducated and dumb... that is what the left is. The dumbest of the dumbest have ivy league degrees.
