Eric Mangini Fired as Coach of Browns (NFL fire thread)
fanhouse ^

Posted on 01/03/2011 7:27:50 AM PST by Perdogg

Eric Mangini was fired by the Browns after two 5-11 seasons as coach, a move that was expected. The team made the announcement just after 10 a.m. ET.

Team president Mike Holmgren released a statement that read: "This decision was not easy for me, and it was one into which I put a great deal of thought. Although we have made improvements this season, my responsibility is to ensure that we establish a program that will allow this team to compete at a championship level. That will continue to be our goal in everything we do. I want to thank Eric for all of his contributions to the Cleveland Browns, and wish him and his family the best of luck in the future."

And I’m wondering what the Cowboy’s will do with Jason Garret. You’d have to be a damn fool to take that job (without a very good contract) because Jerry Jones likes to fire coaches frequently.

“Will Rob Ryan get the job?”

Don’t think so, Ryan’s defense folded like a cheap suit in the last 6 games.

Really it doesn’t matter. Mangini wasn’t any worse than the stiffs they’re talking about bringing in, (Marty Morningwig (sp?)). The rumor in Cleveland is that Holmgren has lost his passion, and we have another situation where the guy running the show is on autopilot.

If he (Holmgren) doesn't, Jon Gruden, John Fox and Marty Mornhinweg would be among the certain candidates.

I don't know much about John Fox's career, but since he is leaving Carolina after a terrible year, why is he a hot candidate for other NFL jobs.

I blame the Carolina management more than Fox. Fox will get swooped up as a Defensive Coordinator somewhere if not as a Head Coach.

Tennessee would also be making a huge mistake if they fired Jeff Fisher, the line forms to the left for teams willing to hire him as their head coach.

Coaching is a network, a club. Once you’re in, you’re in. A member is always preferred to someone new who might be more capable.

The Cowboys offense IMPROVED AFTER their HC was fired!! How is that possible? The OC is now the HC. Why after Phillips was fired did Garret improve his offense? Did he back stab to get the job? Did he hold back on O? His O improved with a backup QB!!! Not the regular starter. I find this amazing that the team’s O improved after a defensive minded coach was fired. The same OC was still there. He was calling the O the entire time. Just makes me wonder.

I could see another team swooping and getting Garrett, Garrett would be a fool to go ahead and agree with the Cowboys without hearing other offers first if they are out there, at least it would give him some leverage over how much control he'll have.

Looking at his record during his nine years at Carolina, Fox had everything for outstanding to dismal years, and everything in between.

I wonder if Bill Cower will consider any offers?

I’ll make a prediction that in a year from now, Rex Ryan is canned from the Jets.

I have no idea in the Dallas situation, but the HC does have veto power. The HC can change the game plan, and influence plays called without calling any actual plays.

I agree. In fact they are improving. And, love your QB. He has a bright future.
Your team president is as cluless as our POTUS.

Oh yea, thanks for the win yesterday.

With all due respect to Cowboy fans, it must be horrible to work for Jerry Jones. I’m sure the good times are OK, but the bad times would more than negate that for me.

I don’t know, but he did play for the Browns. Cowher is a good coach, but Pittsburgh is a great organization. Without a great organization providing quality players, a coach is in big trouble.

The Browns are NOT, and likely never will be, a quality organization.
