CNN) -- The oldest daughter of the Austrian family portrayed in the 1965 film "The Sound of Music" died of heart failure Tuesday, a friend confirmed. Agathe von Trapp, 97, was in a Gilchrist Hospice in Towson, Maryland, when she died, her friend Mary Louise Kane told CNN Thursday. She fell ill November 9 and was moved on December 2 to the Gilchrist Hospice, said Kane, who ran a kindergarten with von Trapp in Glyndon, Maryland. The 16-year-old Liesl von Trapp character in the movie was based on Agathe, but the writer and director took great artistic license with the portrayal, Kane said. "(Von Trapp) was nothing at all like the Liesl character," Kane said. "She was a very private person and a bit shy. She didn't like being in the limelight at all."

I hope a remake of SOM is never considered.
I agree.
Yes. I adore the original.
The 16-year-old Liesl von Trapp
I will never forget that song.....
“I am 16 going on 17...” Wow...what a movie, what a life they had.
At least according to the most recent screenplay for "Sound of Music" that crossed my desk. [/s]
The article made me tear up when she indicated she wasn’t happy with the movie because it didn’t portray her father as loving enough - that he really loved his family.
(I always thought it showed a strict father that adored his family)
To me, the movie didn’t have him show his admoration for his kids until Julie Andrews danced with him.
Amen!!! To That. I thought remaking True Grit was sacrilege, but SOM certainly would be. There is SO MUCH material of interest for movie makers that it defies my belief that they remake classics.
One of the best movies ever. It came out when I was a teen. I went to see it at the movies 3 or 4 times.
Whatever became of her Hitler Youth nazi rat love interest, Rolf?
A remake would be impossible without Rogers and Hammerstein.
Although I suppose they could get 50 Cent and Kanye West to do it...
I thought this thread was going to be some Freeper’s angry opus.
Goodbye, Agathe, until heaven. Rest well. Your talent gave the world a lot of pleasure.
Charmian Carr was 22 when she sang “Sixteen Going On Seventeen.” Movies typically use 30 year olds to play high school kids.
The father actually died just a couple of years after WWII was over; in 1947 I think. I guess that setting was in the very late 1930’s, so he actually didn’t live a very long time after that. He and Maria had 3 more children, for a grand total of 10 children!
The von Trapps emigrated in 1938. Didn’t know the father died that quickly.
