Advice wanted from fellow Freepers on a Honeymoon trip. Where to go.

My son is getting married the weekend of Valentine's Day. He and is wife to be have not yet decided on a honeymoon location. Travel agents are steering them into one of those all inclusive, security fenced in places in Aruba or Cancun etc. I suggested a Cruise, but my son, a plumber and avid golfer, I think would probably go nuts after a couple days without doing something physical. My brother suggest Maui. Staying in San Francisco a day and then flying to there. I say anywhere but Mexico. The drug wars, etc have spilled into places like Alcapulco...so I'd say it would be crazy to go there.

I respect and look forward to the comments here.

Cozumel (removed from the mainland Mexico). The Virgin Islands. Hawaii. Belize. Skiing in Utah, Colorado, etc.

We have stayed at resorts on San Lucia, Grand Cayman, Tortula, Virgin Gorda, Hawaii, and Mexico.

And I can predict with 100% accuracy that he will love a cruise, especially on one of the newer ships. They are active 20 hours a day, all the shore excursions, and you don't have to looking for a restaurant. I have never found anybody under the age of 87 who was bored on any cruise we have been on, and that includes people from ex-NFL players to bridge addicts to avid golfers to just want to be busy all the time people to don't want to do anything people.

If he wants to just lay around, do Virgin Gorda or Tortula. Virgin Gorda has wonderful snorkeling.

If he wants to golf and swim, do San Lucia, Hawaii, or Grand Cayman.

Stay away from Mexico, period. We did honeymoon there 30 years ago in Chichen Nitza and Cancun. Now we don't even get off the cruise ship.

We have friends that go the Roatan and they love it.

My preference would be Grand Cayman or San Lucia.

Tell them to enjoy it.

I agree. Stay away from Mexico or anywhere else there is strife. My Sis in law got mugged in Greece. Go figure.

Best bang for your buck with a golf course for my money is the Dominican Republic and all the “all enclusives”. Food was great the weather great and the resort was top notch.
Tell your son to reconsider the golf...I played on my Honeymoon and am still hearing about it 35 years later.

Maybe the trip is a wedding gift from the parents? Even if not, what the hay is wrong with parents suggesting locations? For gosh sakes, these kids could end up going to Mexico because a travel agent makes $50 more sending them there than hawaii as an example.

You need to sit your son down for a talk about the birds and the bees.

Do NOT patronize Hawaii.

It's an Obama-loving liberal welfare basket case that is currently involved in defraud America about the nature of its Kenyan.

Frankly, at this point in American history, I'd honeymoon by buying $5000 worth of remote land in Idaho and going camping on it.

I'm lazy.

Stay in the US. Americans have targets on their backs everywhere today — even at home. But at least, if you do get in trouble, you have some assurance that the local cops will lend a hand. Outside the US, if you think Obozo’s State Department is going to be much help you’re delusional.

And tell them to NOT go on the honeymoon until a few weeks after the wedding when the stress levels from all that activity have abated a bit. A lot of marriages start to go south on the anxiety riddled honeymoon.

Congratulations to him and best wishes to her.

i also vote for Kauai! we went to Maui on our honeymoon 25 years ago and it’s gorgeous but more congested than Kauai [where we have been several times since]. We stayed on the big island this past summer, which is very different, very lovely and even less congested, but Kauai is my favorite. perfect honeymoon spot!

Thailand.

Its really an adventure. People are laid-back, and it is a fascinating place. A couple days in Bangkok, visiting temples, river-tour, etc...

Then go to the beach - Phuket is nice, has all levels of hotels. Koh Samui slightly more remote and also very nice. Hua Hin is close to Bangkok. Don’t send them to Pattaya - sex trade is in full swing there, they may be shocked by what they see.

We had a wonderful honeymoon 10 years ago in Paris.

My wife took this picture with a throwaway camera (don't forget the camera).

I would agree with the cruise recommendations. There is always plenty to do.
By the way, unless the bride-to-be is also an avid golfer, they should probably stay away from any place with great golf courses. It wouldn't be much of a honeymoon for her if he's spending time away from her on the links ;o)
