Nationalized healthcare ZOT!

Posted on 12/17/2010 7:18:44 PM PST by B_Simons

Sorry if I'm not allowed to post this sort of thread, but I'd rather ask direct questions than interpret answers to other questions an apply them to my own.

I'm from the UK and for school work over the holidays I've got to find and explain/counter arguments for and against a political issue from another country, and I know that healthcare reform is a big one in America at the moment so I picked the easy one.

I've had good experiences with our NHS, and without it I would either be dead or my family would be deeply in debt due to my medical history (liver failure, mainly, which required a transplant). I also have asthma and as I'm 18 and still in full time education my prescribed inhalers are free. My family isn't very wealthy, my dad died when I was young from cancer (luckily his insurance paid off the remainder of the mortgage and a small amount of other debts) and my mum doesn't have a well paying job (below the national mean wage). We live modestly but don't have very financial problems.

So my questions are:

What, exactly is the problem with nationalized/socialized healthcare?

If the problem is due to it being paid for by tax increases, do you expect the increases to be larger or smaller than your current insurance cost?

Do you think it's 'fair' that people who cannot afford health insurance and have expensive medical issues should have to choose between suffering and large amounts of debt?

Do you think the quality of healthcare will improve/worsen with NHC?

Sorry if this thread isn't allowed or isn't in the right place (never used a forum like this before)

Many thanks, Brendan

Firstly I'd like to apologise if the formatting's messed up, I'm not used to this and it's really late here (first night of the holidays! :D ) Sorry if I came across as a troll, but it's interesting to me that the Right in America is so loudly opposed to it while the majority of the Conservatives in the UK oppose cuts to it. Also none of you answered my questions directly :S Sorry if I'm asking for too much :P

-You are about to see the greatest healthcare system of all time for any nation in this world’s history crash and burn under socialism, and your asking us what’s wrong with it???

I’ll tell you what’s wrong with it...

there won’t be ANYWHERE for ANYONE in the world to go now.

You like your socialized medicine??? Great... Now try to find a doctor worth a damb.

Good luck.

-
None of the doctors here are bad, the 'worst' thing is that a lot are from India/nearby countries and have quite strong accents that are difficult to understand :P
I've got a long list of medical issues so I've had a lot of interactions with doctors and none of been bad.
43% of doctors polled in the US have stated that they WILL leave the practice if Obamacare is implemented. That doesn't sound good :S Don't really know what to say to that, where will they go? New private hospitals?

-
I’d start by reading this story:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2642404/posts

- So the family could get the treatment but instead opted to pay a large amount for it in the US? I know the NHS messed up but this is much more unlikely to happen when it's not the hospital but the person paying. How many people have paid in America and had the treatment fail?
-should be posted in bloggers&personal or general/chat
-
Brendan, please stick around and read around. May I ask why you chose to post this in the GOP section?
-
Sorry, didn't realise this was the wrong section. I thought this was for general political themed threads.

- meow! :P

-Socialized medicine and most healthcare insurance programs are unsustainable because they simply cover too much.
...
Imagine what car insurance would costs if it included all of your gas and oil changes.
-
So you're saying that it would be sustainable if it covered basic ailments, like common cold, flu, broken bones, easily treatable cancers etc?

I don't like this car analogy, cars aren't a necessity of life, healthcare is

-Liver transplants and the direction of medical research
I would argue that transplants were researched because a) they were special, involved a large amount of skill, and because it was a new and innovative approach to a problem; and b) was a profitable treatment (though necessary). I agree that the research needs to be somewhat independent and we do have our own highly profitable research industry here in the UK. Do these American businesses, or would and unregulated business, go more for what the people want or for what earns them the most money?

NHS/Charity, politicians and taxes.
'People survive because they pay into their own healthcare.'
-
But wouldn't more survive if they paid through taxes?

-[exDemMom]
Sorry to hear about your friend's father. My uncle had a minor stroke and wasn't completely happy with his treatment either, though this was nearly 15 years ago now. I wonder why nobody asked for him to be moved in that time though? Usually with enough nagging you can find a doctor who will listen, I don't see how this is a problem with the UK's system, it would have happened if we were private too.

1: I won't argue that the brilliant doctors are more likely to work in a competitive market, but these skilled doctors won't evaporate if it's socialised
2: In America you're paying into for-profit business, in the UK the NHS's budget is spent completely on the NHS. Like you said, you get what you pay for, but why pay 10x the price if it's not 10x as good?

-I’m 54 and was diagnosed with terminal cancer 7 years ago. Medicare took care of my treatment. I am in remission now - and not dead [only God knows why].

If I was on the Obama plan, my oncologist says that I would have been denied treatment altogether - due to the classification of “terminal”.
-

Wow, I'm happy to hear that you're recovering! Cancer is common in my family so I'm expecting a diagnosis as I get older, hopefully if I am diagnosed (hopefully not!) I can tell a similar story!

In the UK you still receive treatment regardless of the severity of your cancer. Also, you can pay for private treatment too if you feel it is worth it.

I don't fully know the circumsatnaces of Obama's plan, but I agree that that kind of cost-reward system is wholly wrong.

-So you and your family haven’t been denied a medication yet (that you know of) because it’s expensive. You haven’t had to stand before the death panel yet? Er, I mean Medical Advisory Board..?-

My late grandmother had Alzheimers and MS, I kind of have. However, she was extremely ill and we were hoping that she would pass sooner rather than later as she was in a great deal of pain. She was in a private nursing home where was seen by a GP and my grandfather paid for her medicines. It is possible for 'private' healthcare here, but as the NHS exists there is a standard that those who cannot pay are able to receive adequate treatment without needing to take out loans (the 'death panel' in America I guess is the bank :P )

-EQAndyBuzz's post-

I don't understand, sorry.

-Have you ever been to local office of the Department of Motor Vehicles in the U.S.?-

Not personally but I've seen it on TV shows. Do you really think that it would be that mad? Surely those who already administer it would after it was nationalized?

-Look Brendan. Let me address your asthma. Your inhalers are “free”.

I have asthma too, Brendan. My medicine costs $130 per MONTH that I have to pay for myself, and I am on a fixed income. That is because I and my fellow Americans have to pay for the Research and Development of this wonderful stuff that keeps you and me breathing right. WE here in the States pay for the R&D so you folks in the UK can have it for free. Is that fair?
-
I'd say it's a fair trade for penicillin ;) We also have a multibillion dollar medical research industry in the UK. Should our research not be used to help Americans? I'd hate to develop a medicine to cure sick people and it be restricted to only those who come from the country it was made in.

-[Suicidal friend/Waiting list and Bad doctor stories -
Unfortunately this is a genuine problem, however is kind of misrepresented. Suicidal people aren't common, and unless you're looking for a specialist then most things will be seen to quickly. A GP visit is usually in a day or two and you can also often ring for an emergeancy appointment the same day. However, if people are suicidal then the police can be called and they will send the person to some place where they aren't a threat to themselves (even if this is a police prison cell). Glad to hear your friend is OK now, depression is horrible :(
Bad doctors also are around everywhere, however I don't understand what you mean by 'different provider'? You can ask to see a different doctor here, in fact it's common to see a different one from your GP. (This isn't a problem, as all your records and symptoms and stuff are all kept on a computer and can be accessed by any doctor).

-That's an extremely lazy assumption.-
Not really, according to http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/271467.html (not the greatest source, but whatever) then it'd cost at least (!) $1/4million for a transplant. My family couldn't afford that or insurance costs.

-buh bye

And just like all the other deviants and perverts and their supporters, you lie and dissemble when you label those who from a Moral perspective will not support homosexuality as Homophobic.

Homosexuality is a mental, pychological, and spiritual disease.

You're on the wrong site Troll.

Not worked up or wasting my time. My post was formatted and is saved to a word.doc file. I'm always glad to re-post it to show how much I hate communism and how evil I think it is to rob people of their individual freedoms. IMO the main purpose of 0-Kommie Kare is to replace individual rights with collective rights.

Five snot encrusted DUers may be giggling about this thread but for every one of them 20 lurkers will find a collection of posts with a wealth of information and sound reasoning to repeal 0-Kommie Kare completely.

There is a tragic misconception about the availability of healthcare in America, even among Americans—and it is propagated by the Left.

The fact is that no one is denied healthcare —even expensive healthcare—or turned away from hospitals because they don’t have an insurance policy.

Every local county government (or sometimes cities) has taxpayer-funded hospitals for the poor where treatments are given and costs are based on the ability to pay. No ability, no pay or at most a token payment.

So while many have no insurance policy, they still get their medical needs taken care of through their local taxing authoriity.

Start with that premise and the house of cards of a need for a federal nationwide system funded by additional taxes comes tumbling down.

Apparently you have not done much research on the subject of Socialized Medicine and the overall complete and utter failure that it is:

Let's start with the across the board much higher rates of premature deaths as a result of such systems:
