Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.

I hope all of you will stop by.

This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.

If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.

We finally got above freezing here in almost a week of wind chills at 0 and an ice storm. Yuck.

Garden is sleeping. Nothing but planning now.

Rainy and warm (relatively) Friday morning here on The Plains! I’ll be picking two of my tomatoes today. That’s about it. Most of the day I’ll be sewing, finishing two of my Christmas projects today.

Finally got my Huntsville AL raised weed, (Maple tree) sown into the mulch pile still in its plastic container. It grew 2 feet in AL and an additional three here in the summer. It is loaded with buds just waiting to grow in the spring. We will see how it does in South Dakota winter. Maple trees have not done well for me, as I had experience with winter kill for six years when the planted maple tree would die back all of the summer growth, and start anew each spring. Finally got tired of that and finished what winter started.

Still harvesting lettuce, spinach and basketball sized heads of broccoli out of my greenhouse. Shallots, too. Brussels sprouts are getting close. Round 2 of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, lettuce and spinach all doing well. Onions for next year’s salsa are also coming along nicely. Still working on arbors for my berries. Cold weather halted that about a week ago, but it might be warm enough over the next few days to dig the remaining post holes. Also been working on fencing off about 20 acres of new pasture. Fighting my way through a vine covered privit and green brier patch. Overall not much fun, but I have found an odd satisfaction in hacking privit into tiny little pieces.......

Gardening shut down for the season, as it is 10 degrees today! I have focused my efforts in another area until the spring thaw:

Since it is so freaking cold here in the Ohio Valley, I have started a polar bear relocation charity. To donate, go to www.savemyfurryass.org. We will be relocating polar bears from the warm, sunny Arctic to the cold, frozen Ohio Valley. As an added bonus, this relocation program will also solve our deer overpopulation problem. Since the deer have never seen polar bears, they should be easy prey. The polar bears can feast on all the deer they want, as well as the homeless suffering from six years of Democrat controlled Congress. If food starts to run short, I plan on putting up traps for more food. At the local Walmart will be large boxes with signs that read: Enter if you voted for Obama, free prize inside!

Much rain is forecast to hit the Vast Bender Estate on Humboldt Bay today and through late next week but I think this storm is colder then the one moving through So Cal now. My gardening sanity is invested in my Garlic patch and a large tub of Carrots plus the beds of Red Oats and Bell Beans are at a perfect height right now. I only go out there to toss some birdseed on the ground for the Quail and Juncos and eat a fresh Carrot. I saw a Coopers Hawk chasing a Quail yesterday but the berry brambles offered cover...
