WASHINGTON (AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. recalled about 2.2 million electric heaters Thursday after receiving reports of burn injuries and property damage from fire.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of "Flow Pro," "Airtech," "Aloha Breeze" and "Comfort Essentials" heaters sold at Walmart stores nationwide from December 2001 to October 2009

That style of heater works fine. Just protect it from

Aloha Breeze Electric Heaters Recalled
Where’s the Mai Tai holder?
We call ‘em milkhouse heaters. They’re totally crude, just a coiled wire in front of a small fan. Hot (warm)air comes out (not much), and anybody who leaves one of these things unattended is asking for a fire. If you run them from a cheap extension cord, the cord can melt and start a fire, too. They make plastic ones that actually smell like burning plastic while they run. That can’t be good.
I have one. Absolute junk. I don’t know why I didn’t throw it away last year when it failed to keep my small motorhome at 55 degrees last winter, but now I’m taking the garbage back to WalMart for a refund.
these small heaters are all 1500 watts
that’s basically what you can get out of a standard 110v outlet
fancy case, oil filled tubes, “ceramic”, fake fireplace, yadda yadda
they’re all basically 1500 watts
obviously there’s some differences in robustness of construction but the heat output is all the same
Is it just my cynical view, or is common sense MUCH less common these days?
Oh, when you first turn it on it gets hot, but the thermostatic control is shot to heck, so it runs for a minute or two, then the case temp/handles on the front causes the thermostat to shut the thing down. I replaced it with a tower heater that oscillates and has a fan and two settings for power output. Works great, keeps the little moho nice and comfy, if I need to use the generator, etc.
Indeed! I had one very similar in my 24 foot camper. Kept the place toasty, but took hours to get it warm.
“Aloha Breeze”. Defective hot air? I thought for a minute this was about Obama.
I’ve been using an earlier version for 10 or 12 years with no problems. It’s probably the same case as with the small kerosene heaters, nothing is totally idiot proof and there is a surplus of idiots.
Like I keep saying, "Stupidity has no limits."
Agree on all points but cheaper. An oil filled 1500 watt heater uses as much electricity as a 1500 watt coiled wire heater. Electric heaters are inherently very close to 100% efficient (that is, nearly all the energy consumed is converted into heat). The fan (if any) uses a few watts at most. The only real difference between the two types of heaters is how the heat is distributed into the room, and the oil heaters seem to do a better job of that. But, for as long as they are turned on, they use the same amount of energy, they emit the same number of BTUs, and they cost the same to operate.
Not exactly. Once the oil is heated, the oil heater will use less juice to maintain a given temp. Now start-up heating, you are correct; same energy consumption.
Watts are watts.
X amount of watts in a resistance type heater are going to produce Y amount of btus of heat.
We’re not talking heat pumps here are we?
No, but we are talking about a heated volume of oil which releases said heat at a slow rate, thus requiring less electricity to heat a room than a conventional resistance coil type heater.
Do a little research and you will find that I am right and frankly I don’t see the point of this on going tit for tat.
