10 Things Every Home Should Have For Short-term Survival

1. Guns! Shotgun – most commonly a simple 12-gauge pump (20-gauge if weaker-statured people will be using it.) Pistol – If you live in a state where it’s legal to own/carry a pistol for self defense, then you should be doing it. Battle Rifle – We’re talking those mean, state-of-the art, misnamed “assault” rifles. Mine’s in .223 caliber, and I make no excuses for it. It’s accurate out to long distances, accepts a 30-round magazine, and puts out a high rate of suppressive fire. And make sure you have plenty of ammo. (We’re talking thousands of rounds. No one ever came out of a firefight saying “Darn, I wish I’d had fewer bullets!) 2. Water 3. Heat 4. Food 5. Medical supplies 6. Power and Lights 7. Communications 8. Transportation 9. Entertainment 10. God

Good idea. I have a good supply of such myself. However, the most important survival item is INFORMATION. People that know how to cure infected wounds, build shelters, plant foodstuffs, generate electricity, purify water, treat sewage, distill alcohol, etc. etc. will be like Kings (or at least pampered Court magicians) after the “fall”.

Might be best to just save your money and let #10 take care of things.

How about we keep #10 in the #1 spot and see how things work out...all the rest are better for that IMHO.

I want to store gasoline. Metal or plastic cans make a difference? Also, is an insulated garage an ok place for it?

That’s what my Dad prefers. Great for close-range defense, but you might want to consider hunting and long-range shooting as well.

A man with any firearm, and the will to use it to survive, will be able to procure the other things he needs to provide for his family.

Don’t forget power! Most of our modern commo methods are useless without it.

I would highly recommend reading the Book One Second After. It's a fiction about an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) attack on America. It's a great read, but also points out many survival tips if it ever did hit the fan, EMP or something else.

The most useful gun for “long term survival” is a simple .22LR. Ammo is cheep, so you can buy years worth for a minimal investment. The .22LR is accurate, and can bring down small game that you may end up having to survive on like, rats, squirrels, birds, dogs, cats, etc. And it is still capable of stopping an intruder or at least making them turn tail if it came down to that. And the sound does not carry long distances, and keeping others from finding your location may be a matter of life and death.

In the book, after money was made worthless, bullets were the most valuable trading item. Not much trading value for a 44 mag when a small percentage of people shoot one. Go for the common round.

That’s a good point. Can you recommend any book or books that cover those sorts of topics? An encyclopedia on basic living skills?

I love my SKS, (chinese stock for my T-Rex arms!) but definatly would rather have my bolt action .22 if I could only have one gun (cruel world) nothing really to break and probably the most common ammo out there, plus it is lighter and i can pocket probably 5 times the ammo for the same weight.

Yeah, before my unfortunate accident, my composite stock chinese SKS was a great an scary lead thrower and could really scare someone with anything less than what I have. I HAD a bunch of ammo lined up on stripper clip and can reload the sucker in less then a few seconds.

I also HAD a .22 Mossberg from the 40s and it is a VERY reliable and well sighted gun. I would prefer a scoped Marlin, but my next gun (which will also suffer some sort of unforeseen accident) will probably be a 12 gauge Mossberg or a CZ52.

Stills are easy to make and can convert most any plant material to alcohol.

Also, stored alcohol is highly flammable and difficult to move.

I’ve got some work to do here.

Good thing I got my wife on board finally. When the FCC started to attack our 1st amendment rights she knew number two was right behind. She said “Buy a gun as soon as you can after Christmas.”

I’ve got about 1 week of food in the garage, now I just need to start stocking up on grains so I can brew beer in the meantime while I wait for the cavalry.

I have an EMP question. Why didn’t the above ground tests in the 1950s and 60s fry everything in Arizona, NM, Utah and Nevada?

A damned good idea. I have a set of HAM gear, solar panels/converters, etc. inside a large steel military packing case inside a strong cardboard box inside a grounded converted filing cabinet.

This is an effective poor-mans Faraday cage.

The big one is energy. You need concentrated energy to get anywhere (gas, diesel, etc) I am not a big fan of EMP apocalypses, but I’m pretty sure my few solar panels are not designed for that. If people insist on solar, then they should probably keep spares in the basement. It goes without saying that a wood stove is essential for heat and cooking.

But all those gun and their ammo fell in a lake during a canoe accident.

Same thing happened to my gold and silver coins.

:D

I know solar power is really taking off. Anyone have a really good source for SP heaters, SP generators that can supply some basic elctrical services?

Fuel only last for so long and has a short shelf life.

If you are planning for a total collapse of society standards, and you want food from my orchards, you better bring something more useful to me than shiny, soft metal.

Ammo will always be accepted for surplus food.

Gasoline storage is problematic. Use a stabilizer and plastic storage. Even so, shelf-life is limited. Diesel is a far better alternative.
